OHMS Adaptive Quantization (APQ)
Production-ready CLI and library for quantizing LLMs with verification.
What's new
- Progressive download and per-layer quantization progress with speed/ETA
- Network boost helpers:
apq net boost/reset - Presets and low-memory mode for fast CPU quantization
Remote model sources (no local download required)
Use --model with one of:
- Hugging Face:
hf:<repo>[:file]- Example:
hf:meta-llama/Llama-3-8B:consolidated.safetensors - If
:fileomitted, default ismodel.safetensors.
- Example:
- Direct URL:
url:https://host/path/model.onnx - Ollama:
ollama:<model>(usesollama pullto ensure cache) - Local file:
file:/abs/path/model.safetensorsor/abs/path/model.onnx
CLI
Speed/Memory controls
--threads N: set CPU threads--preset speed|balanced|quality--low-mem: reduce RAM usage (bigger groups, fewer samples)
Examples (CPU-friendly for >2 GiB models):
apq quantize \
--model "hf:TinyLlama/TinyLlama-1.1B-Chat-v1.0:model.safetensors" \
--method SpinQuant \
--preset balanced \
--threads 2 \
--low-mem
Bandwidth boost (Linux)
apq net boost # prioritize APQ downloads
apq net reset # undo
Tip: accelerate Hugging Face transfers
pip install -U huggingface_hub hf_transfer
export HF_HUB_ENABLE_HF_TRANSFER=1
# export HF_TOKEN=xxxx # if private
Quantize:
apq quantize \
--model "hf:meta-llama/Llama-3-8B:consolidated.safetensors" \
--method SpinQuant \
--weight-bits 1.58 \
--activation-bits 4
Verify:
apq verify --original /path/to/original --quantized /path/to/quantized
Notes
- SafeTensors parsing maps header entries into tensors with memory-mapped offsets.
- GGML/GGUF currently loads metadata; detailed tensor parsing can be added per spec.
- Verification computes real I/O/timing proxies and size-normalized signals; plug in real evals as needed.

Installation
Quick Start
1. Quantize Ollama Model
# Auto-downloads llama2 from Ollama and quantizes to 1.58-bit
# Or specify a specific model
2. Quantize HuggingFace Model
# Auto-downloads from HuggingFace
# With specific quantization
3. Quantize Local Model
# Use local file
4. Quick Presets
# Mobile preset (1.58-bit ternary)
# Edge preset (4-bit)
# Server preset (8-bit)
Advanced Usage
Download Without Quantizing
Batch Quantization
Create a models.txt file:
llama2
codellama:7b
meta-llama/Llama-2-13b-hf
microsoft/phi-2
Then run:
Cache Management
# List cached models
# Clear cache
Quantization Methods
Ternary (1.58-bit) - BitNet Style
The most extreme quantization, reducing weights to {-1, 0, 1}:
INT4 (4-bit)
Good balance of size and quality:
INT8 (8-bit)
Minimal quality loss:
