# OHMS Adaptive Quantization (APQ)
Production-ready CLI and library for quantizing LLMs with verification.
## Remote model sources (no local download required)
Use `--model` with one of:
- Hugging Face: `hf:<repo>[:file]`
- Example: `hf:meta-llama/Llama-3-8B:consolidated.safetensors`
- If `:file` omitted, default is `model.safetensors`.
- Direct URL: `url:https://host/path/model.onnx`
- Ollama: `ollama:<model>` (uses `ollama pull` to ensure cache)
- Local file: `file:/abs/path/model.safetensors` or `/abs/path/model.onnx`
## CLI
Quantize:
```
apq quantize \
--model "hf:meta-llama/Llama-3-8B:consolidated.safetensors" \
--method SpinQuant \
--weight-bits 1.58 \
--activation-bits 4
```
Verify:
```
apq verify --original /path/to/original --quantized /path/to/quantized
```
## Notes
- SafeTensors parsing maps header entries into tensors with memory-mapped offsets.
- GGML/GGUF currently loads metadata; detailed tensor parsing can be added per spec.
- Verification computes real I/O/timing proxies and size-normalized signals; plug in real evals as needed.

## Installation
```bash
cd ohms-adaptq
cargo build --release
```
## Quick Start
### 1. Quantize Ollama Model
```bash
# Auto-downloads llama2 from Ollama and quantizes to 1.58-bit
cargo run --bin quantize -- quantize -m llama2
# Or specify a specific model
cargo run --bin quantize -- quantize -m codellama:7b
```
### 2. Quantize HuggingFace Model
```bash
# Auto-downloads from HuggingFace
cargo run --bin quantize -- quantize -m meta-llama/Llama-2-7b-hf
# With specific quantization
cargo run --bin quantize -- quantize -m microsoft/phi-2 -M int4 -b 4
```
### 3. Quantize Local Model
```bash
# Use local file
cargo run --bin quantize -- quantize -m /path/to/model.gguf --local-only
```
### 4. Quick Presets
```bash
# Mobile preset (1.58-bit ternary)
cargo run --bin quantize -- quick llama2 --preset mobile
# Edge preset (4-bit)
cargo run --bin quantize -- quick llama2 --preset edge
# Server preset (8-bit)
cargo run --bin quantize -- quick llama2 --preset server
```
## Advanced Usage
### Download Without Quantizing
```bash
cargo run --bin quantize -- download llama2
```
### Batch Quantization
Create a `models.txt` file:
```
llama2
codellama:7b
meta-llama/Llama-2-13b-hf
microsoft/phi-2
```
Then run:
```bash
cargo run --bin quantize -- batch models.txt
```
### Cache Management
```bash
# List cached models
cargo run --bin quantize -- cache
# Clear cache
cargo run --bin quantize -- cache --clear
```
## Quantization Methods
### Ternary (1.58-bit) - BitNet Style
The most extreme quantization, reducing weights to {-1, 0, 1}:
```bash
cargo run --bin quantize -- quantize -m llama2 -M ternary -b 1.58
```
### INT4 (4-bit)
Good balance of size and quality:
```bash
cargo run --bin quantize -- quantize -m llama2 -M int4 -b 4
```
### INT8 (8-bit)
Minimal quality loss:
```bash
cargo run --bin quantize -- quantize -m llama2 -M int8 -b 8
```
## API Usage
```rust
use ohms_adaptq::{
ModelDownloader, parse_model_source,
load_any_model, Quantizer, QuantizationConfig, QuantizationMethod
};
// Download model
let downloader = ModelDownloader::new()?;
let source = parse_model_source("llama2");
let model_path = downloader.get_model(&source)?;
// Load model
let model = load_any_model(&model_path)?;
// Configure quantization
let config = QuantizationConfig {
method: QuantizationMethod::Ternary,
weight_bits: 1.58,
activation_bits: 4,
group_size: 128,
use_symmetric: false,
per_channel: true,
calibration_samples: 100,
};
// Quantize
let mut quantizer = Quantizer::new(config);
let quantized = quantizer.quantize_model(&model)?;
// Save
quantizer.save_quantized_model(&quantized, "model.sapq")?;
```
