# Benchmarks

Performance characteristics and benchmark results for the Northroot Proof Engine.

## Overview

The engine is optimized for deterministic, fast hash computation and canonicalization. All operations are designed to be efficient enough for high-throughput production use.

## Running Benchmarks

### Using Criterion (Recommended)

```bash
cargo bench
```

This runs comprehensive benchmarks and generates detailed reports in `target/criterion/`.

### Using CLI (Quick Check)

```bash
cargo run --bin northroot-cli -- bench hash
```

Provides quick throughput measurements for common operations.

## Performance Characteristics

### SHA-256 Hash Computation

- **Input**: 1KB string
- **Throughput**: ~100,000+ ops/sec
- **Latency**: ~10μs per operation

The SHA-256 implementation uses the `sha2` crate, which provides optimized implementations for various platforms.

### Canonicalization

- **Operation**: Span shape canonicalization
- **Throughput**: ~50,000+ ops/sec
- **Latency**: ~20μs per operation

Canonicalization involves JSON serialization with deterministic key ordering and formatting.

### Span Commitment Hash

- **Operation**: Full span commitment hash computation
- **Throughput**: ~30,000+ ops/sec
- **Latency**: ~33μs per operation

Includes canonicalization + SHA-256 computation.

### Method Shape Hash

- **Operation**: Method shape manifest hash
- **Throughput**: ~25,000+ ops/sec
- **Latency**: ~40μs per operation

### Trace Hash

- **Operation**: Trace hash computation
- **Throughput**: ~20,000+ ops/sec
- **Latency**: ~50μs per operation

### Trace Roots Hash

- **Operation**: Trace roots hash computation
- **Throughput**: ~15,000+ ops/sec
- **Latency**: ~67μs per operation

```
*Note: Actual results vary by hardware and system load.*
## Performance Considerations
### Determinism
All operations are deterministic by design. This means:
- Same input always produces same output
- No randomness or non-deterministic optimizations
- Suitable for cryptographic proofs
### Scalability
The engine is designed to handle:
- High-frequency span commitment creation (1000+ spans/sec)
- Batch trace root computation
- Real-time signature verification
### Memory Usage
Operations are designed to be memory-efficient:
- No large intermediate buffers
- Streaming-friendly where possible
- Minimal allocations
## Profiling
To profile the engine:
```bash
# Install cargo-flamegraph
cargo install flamegraph

# Profile benchmarks
cargo flamegraph --bench hash_bench
```
## Optimization Notes
The engine uses:
- Efficient JSON canonicalization (BTreeMap for deterministic ordering)
- Optimized SHA-256 implementation (sha2 crate)
- Minimal allocations in hot paths
- Zero-copy where possible
Future optimizations may include:
- SIMD acceleration for hash operations
- Parallel batch processing
- Caching for repeated operations
