# ffmpeg Backend for Streaming
## Overview
The ffmpeg backend provides robust streaming support for HLS and DASH streams by using ffmpeg as a subprocess bridge. This allows nab to handle complex scenarios that are difficult to implement in pure Rust:
- DASH streams (.mpd manifests)
- Encrypted HLS (Widevine DRM, AES encryption)
- Live streams with DVR capabilities
- Transcoding on-the-fly
- Complex format conversions
## Architecture
### Files
- `src/stream/backend.rs` - Backend trait definition
- `src/stream/backends/ffmpeg.rs` - ffmpeg implementation
- `src/stream/backends/mod.rs` - Module exports
### Key Components
**`FfmpegBackend` struct:**
- Locates ffmpeg binary in PATH (uses `which` crate)
- Builds command-line arguments dynamically
- Manages subprocess lifecycle
- Parses progress from ffmpeg stderr
- Streams data via stdout pipe
**`StreamBackend` trait:**
- `stream_to()` - Stream to any AsyncWrite (stdout, network, etc.)
- `stream_to_file()` - Stream directly to a file
- `can_handle()` - Check if backend supports the manifest
- `backend_type()` - Returns `BackendType::Ffmpeg`

## ffmpeg Command Examples
The backend generates ffmpeg commands like:

## Progress Parsing
The backend parses ffmpeg's stderr output to extract progress information:
**ffmpeg progress line:**

```
**Parsed fields:**
- `time_seconds` - Position in stream (HH:MM:SS.ms → seconds)
- `speed` - Processing speed multiplier (1.5x = 50% faster than realtime)
- `bitrate_bps` - Current bitrate in bits/second
## Error Handling
**Exit codes:**
- `0` - Success
- `255` - Often returned when duration limit is hit (not an error)
- Other non-zero - Actual errors
**stderr monitoring:**
- Lines containing "Error" → logged as warnings
- Lines containing "Warning" → logged as warnings
- Progress lines → parsed and passed to callback
## Testing
**6 comprehensive tests:**
1. `test_parse_progress` - Verifies progress line parsing
2. `test_build_args_basic` - Basic argument construction
3. `test_build_args_with_transcode` - Transcoding arguments
4. `test_build_args_with_headers` - Header formatting
5. `test_build_args_with_duration` - Duration limit
6. `test_can_handle` - Manifest URL detection

## Performance
**Overhead:**
- Subprocess spawn: ~5-10ms
- Stream copying: Near zero-copy (pipe buffer)
- Memory usage: 64KB buffer per stream
**Efficiency:**
- Uses `-c copy` by default (no re-encoding)
- Streams as MPEG-TS (low latency, streamable)
- Minimal buffering for real-time playback
## Integration with Other Backends
The ffmpeg backend complements the native HLS backend:
**Native HLS** (pure Rust):
- Unencrypted HLS streams
- Simple m3u8 manifests
- Zero external dependencies
- Faster startup
**ffmpeg Backend:**
- DASH streams (.mpd)
- Encrypted content
- Complex manifest parsing
- Transcoding support
- Requires ffmpeg installation

## Requirements
**Runtime:**
- ffmpeg must be in PATH
- Minimum version: ffmpeg 4.0+ (tested with 6.x)

- `anyhow` - Error handling
- `async-trait` - Trait async support

## Future Enhancements
**Potential improvements:**
1. Hardware acceleration support (`-hwaccel`)
2. Bandwidth-adaptive quality selection
3. Multi-stream download (parallel segments)
4. Resume capability for interrupted streams
5. Built-in DRM decryption (Widevine CDM)
6. Stream quality auto-detection
7. HLS variant selection based on bandwidth
