# MCP Agent Implementation Status

## ✅ What's Implemented (Working Now)

### Core Functionality
- **MCP Server**: JSON-RPC server running on configurable port
- **Policy Engine**: Pattern-based access control with YAML/TOML support
- **Audit Logging**: Complete audit trail with rotation and compression
- **Response Redaction**: Automatic removal of sensitive data (tokens, keys, etc.)
- **Auth Profiles**: Environment variable-based authentication management
- **Three Tools**:
  - `tools/list` - List available operations
  - `tools/show` - Show operation details
  - `tools/run` - Execute operations

### Basic CLI
- `--generate-config` - Generate example configuration
- `--config` - Specify config file
- `--port` - Override port
- `--host` - Override host
- `--config-dir` - Specify config directory

## 🚧 What's Pending (TODO)

### High Priority - CLI Commands
1. **Update main.rs to use new CLI structure**
   - Current: Old argument parser
   - Need: Subcommand structure (init, start, stop, etc.)

2. **Implement core commands**:
   ```bash
   mrapids-agent init      # Create config structure
   mrapids-agent start     # Start server (with --daemon option)
   mrapids-agent stop      # Stop daemon
   mrapids-agent status    # Check if running
   mrapids-agent test      # Test connection and operations
   ```

3. **Auth profile management**:
   ```bash
   mrapids-agent auth list
   mrapids-agent auth add <name> --type bearer
   mrapids-agent auth remove <name>
   mrapids-agent auth show <name>
   ```

### Medium Priority - Distribution
4. **Package for distribution**:
   - Publish to crates.io as `mrapids-agent`
   - Create GitHub releases with pre-built binaries
   - Support install via `cargo install mrapids-agent`

5. **Platform binaries**:
   - macOS (x86_64, aarch64)
   - Linux (x86_64, aarch64)
   - Windows (x86_64)

6. **Integration testing**:
   - Test with real Claude Desktop
   - Validate all JSON-RPC methods
   - Test policy enforcement scenarios

### Low Priority - Enhancements
7. **Advanced features**:
   - WebSocket support for streaming responses
   - Rate limiting per agent/operation
   - Response caching for read operations
   - Batch operations (multiple calls in one request)

8. **Unified gateway mode**:
   - Single agent handling multiple API specs
   - Dynamic routing based on operation prefix
   - Shared auth context

9. **Monitoring & observability**:
   - Prometheus metrics endpoint
   - Health check dashboard
   - Performance profiling

## 🎯 MVP Definition

For a true MVP that users can `cargo install`, we need:

1. ✅ Core MCP server (DONE)
2. ✅ Policy engine (DONE)
3. ✅ Audit & redaction (DONE)
4. ⏳ User-friendly CLI (PARTIAL)
5. ❌ Published package (TODO)
6. ❌ Basic documentation (DONE but needs updates)

**Estimated effort to MVP**: 3-4 days of development

## 🚀 Quick Wins

These can be done quickly to improve usability:

1. **Fix main.rs** (2 hours)
   - Wire up the CLI structure already created
   - Implement init and start commands

2. **Create test script** (1 hour)
   - Automated test for all JSON-RPC methods
   - Validate against example APIs

3. **Package script** (2 hours)
   - Build script for all platforms
   - Create tarball/zip distributions

## 📊 Current State Summary

```
Core Features:    ████████████████████ 100%
CLI Interface:    ████░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░  20%
Distribution:     ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░   0%
Documentation:    ████████████████░░░░  80%
Testing:          ████████░░░░░░░░░░░░  40%
```

**Overall: 60% complete** for a user-installable tool

## Next Steps

1. **Immediate**: Update main.rs to use the new CLI structure
2. **This Week**: Implement core commands (init, start, test)
3. **Next Week**: Package and publish to crates.io
4. **Future**: Enhanced features based on user feedback

The core MCP functionality is solid and working. The main gap is the user-friendly CLI interface and distribution packaging.
