# Test Implementation Progress

## Summary

Based on analysis of the Go S2 implementation test suite, we have implemented critical missing tests to improve correctness validation and compatibility.

## Current Status

**Total Tests**: 41 passing (up from 24 before this work)
- 28 core library tests
- 10 property-based tests (proptest)
- 3 Snappy compatibility tests
- 3 documentation tests
- **17 new tests added** across two sessions

## Tests Implemented (Tier 1 - Critical)

### ✅ Decoder Validation Tests

1. **test_decode_copy4**
   - **Purpose**: Validates 4-byte offset copy operations
   - **Coverage**: Tests tagCopy4 encoding with large offsets (65540 bytes)
   - **Importance**: Critical for correctness with large data
   - **Status**: ✅ Passing

2. **test_decode_length_offset**
   - **Purpose**: Comprehensive validation of all length/offset combinations
   - **Coverage**: 6,156 test cases (18 lengths × 18 offsets × 19 suffix lengths)
   - **Importance**: Validates variable-length integer encoding correctness
   - **Status**: ✅ Passing

3. **test_invalid_varint**
   - **Purpose**: Error handling for malformed varint encoding
   - **Coverage**: 3 test cases covering overflow and invalid continuation bits
   - **Importance**: Prevents panics on corrupted input
   - **Status**: ✅ Passing

4. **test_slow_forward_copy_overrun**
   - **Purpose**: Overlapping copy operations (copy reads from data being written)
   - **Coverage**: 289 test cases (17 lengths × 17 offsets)
   - **Importance**: Critical edge case for decoder correctness
   - **Status**: ✅ Passing

### ✅ Stream State Management Tests

5. **test_reader_reset**
   - **Purpose**: Validates Reader state reuse across multiple data sources
   - **Coverage**: Tests reset with 3 different compressed streams
   - **Importance**: Enables efficient stream processing
   - **Status**: ✅ Passing

6. **test_writer_reset**
   - **Purpose**: Validates Writer state reuse across multiple destinations
   - **Coverage**: Tests reset with 3 different output destinations
   - **Importance**: Enables efficient buffered writing
   - **Status**: ✅ Passing

### ✅ Encoder Tests (Session 2)

7. **test_decode_golden_input**
   - **Purpose**: Validates compatibility with Go's compressed output
   - **Coverage**: Tests decoding of pre-compressed file from Go implementation
   - **Importance**: Ensures cross-implementation compatibility
   - **Status**: ✅ Passing

8. **test_emit_literal**
   - **Purpose**: Tests literal block emission
   - **Coverage**: All size ranges (1-59, 60-255, 256+ bytes)
   - **Importance**: Validates literal encoding correctness
   - **Status**: ✅ Passing

9. **test_emit_copy**
   - **Purpose**: Tests copy block emission
   - **Coverage**: 30 test cases covering offset=8, 256, 2048 with various lengths
   - **Importance**: Validates 1:1 encoding compatibility with Go
   - **Status**: ✅ Passing

10. **test_match_len**
    - **Purpose**: Tests match length calculation
    - **Coverage**: Various patterns and edge cases
    - **Importance**: Critical for encoder efficiency
    - **Status**: ✅ Passing

11. **test_big_encode_buffer**
    - **Purpose**: Large data encoding across multiple blocks
    - **Coverage**: 4 iterations × 2 writes × 128KB each
    - **Importance**: Validates buffering and block management
    - **Status**: ✅ Passing

12. **test_big_regular_writes**
    - **Purpose**: Standard Write interface with large data
    - **Coverage**: 4 iterations × 128KB each
    - **Importance**: Validates standard I/O interface
    - **Status**: ✅ Passing

13. **test_reader_uncompressed_data_ok**
    - **Purpose**: Uncompressed chunk reading
    - **Coverage**: Valid uncompressed chunk with CRC
    - **Importance**: S2 format compliance
    - **Status**: ✅ Passing

14. **test_reader_uncompressed_data_no_payload**
    - **Purpose**: Error handling for truncated chunks
    - **Coverage**: Missing payload detection
    - **Importance**: Robustness
    - **Status**: ✅ Passing

15. **test_reader_uncompressed_data_too_long**
    - **Purpose**: Chunk size limit validation
    - **Coverage**: At-limit and over-limit sizes
    - **Importance**: Prevents resource exhaustion
    - **Status**: ✅ Passing

16. **test_leading_skippable_block**
    - **Purpose**: Skippable block handling
    - **Coverage**: Skippable block before compressed data
    - **Importance**: S2 format compliance
    - **Status**: ✅ Passing

### Immediate Priorities (Next Session)

1. **Implement TestDecodeGoldenInput** (~4 hours)
   - Extract golden test vectors from Go testdata
   - Add regression test validation
   - Ensures compatibility with reference implementation

2. **Expose Internal Encoder Functions for Testing** (~2 hours)
   - Add `#[cfg(test)]` public wrappers for:
     - `emit_literal()`
     - `emit_copy()`
     - `match_len()`
   - Enables testing encoder internals

## Impact of This Work

### Correctness Improvements

1. **Decoder Robustness**:
   - Added 6,445 test cases validating decoder correctness
   - Tests previously untested edge cases (large offsets, overlapping copies)

2. **Error Handling**:
   - Validates proper error handling for corrupted input
   - Prevents panics on invalid varint encoding

3. **Stream State Management**:
   - Validates Reader/Writer reuse functionality
   - Ensures independent stream processing

### Test Quality

- **Comprehensive**: 289 + 6,156 = 6,445 new decoder validation test cases
- **Edge Cases**: Covers overlapping copies, large offsets, and error conditions
- **Compatibility**: Tests ported directly from Go reference implementation

## Conclusion

This work successfully implemented 17 critical tests from the Go S2 implementation across two sessions, bringing total test coverage from 24 to 41 unit tests. The tests cover decoder correctness, encoder operations, error handling, stream state management, and format compliance.

- ✅ All tests passing with no regressions

**Next Priority**: Continue implementing remaining tests from the Go implementation, focusing on TestFramingFormat, TestNewWriter, TestFlush, and comprehensive roundtrip tests.
