# Appearance and terminal features
Customize Mission Control's colors, motion, layout, and image previews.
## Change theme
Enter `/theme` to preview available themes and save one. A temporary launch override is also available:
```sh
magi-code --theme matrix-green
```
Custom themes live under `$MC_HOME/themes/` or `~/.magi-code/themes/`. Their IDs use `custom:` plus the exact case-sensitive filename, such as `custom:Solarized.toml`.
Use the complete [custom theme example](../features/runtime-theming.md#complete-custom-theme-example) as a starting point.
## Reduce motion or disable color
Edit global or project `settings.json`:
```json
{
"interface": {
"appearance": {
"theme": "matrix-green",
"reduced_motion": true
},
"no_color": false
}
}
```
`reduced_motion` disables animated running indicators and brief completion accents. `NO_COLOR` in the environment disables color regardless of a saved `false` value.
## Open activity views
Header toggles open Activity Tree (`Alt-1`), Session Files (`Alt-2`), or Summary (`Alt-3`) over the right side. `Alt-A` pins them beside Transcript, narrowing it to make room. Open panels, their order, and pin behavior save globally and return on restart; without saved preferences they start closed and unpinned. Use the Hide controls or panel shortcuts to close them; `Esc` closes only unpinned panels. `Shift-Tab` switches Transcript/Changes.
## Show local images
Kitty and Ghostty can show local PNG, JPEG, GIF, and WebP images below transcript cards. Previews can come from `view_image` results or local Markdown image links in completed assistant responses.
Image previews:
- remain local and do not call a provider
- appear only in the main transcript
- fall back to text when unsupported
- accept local files, not URLs or data URLs
- stay inside workspace policy unless absolute paths are allowed
The `view_image` tool is separate: it sends an image to the configured vision provider so the agent can inspect it.
