# Configure magi-code

Use Mission Control for common settings. Edit JSON directly for options not exposed in the interface.

## Open settings

Enter `/settings`. Settings are grouped into Context, Agent settings, Models, Tools, Internal Tooling, and Other.

- `Tab` changes tabs.
- `Ctrl-G` switches between Global and Project scope.
- `Enter` edits or accepts a value.
- `Ctrl-S` saves and reloads settings for future actions.

Changes remain drafts until saved. Mission Control refreshes affected views after a successful save.

## Choose a scope

**Global** settings apply everywhere and live at `~/.magi-code/settings.json`. If `MC_HOME` is set, they live at `$MC_HOME/settings.json` instead.

**Project** settings apply only when magi-code starts in that exact directory. They live at `.magi-code/settings.json` under the launch directory. Magi-code does not search parent directories for project settings.

Project values override matching global values. Use global settings for preferences and project settings for repository-specific behavior.

## Edit JSON directly

A small settings file looks like this:

```json
{
  "$schema": "./state/settings.schema.json",
  "schema_version": 2,
  "agent": {
    "fast": { "enabled": false }
  },
  "interface": {
    "appearance": { "theme": "matrix-green", "reduced_motion": false }
  }
}
```

Keep `schema_version` at `2`. The generated schema supplies completion and descriptions in editors that support JSON Schema.

Never store API keys, OAuth tokens, bearer headers, or account IDs in settings. Provider keys belong in environment variables; Codex OAuth credentials are managed by `/login`.

## Other settings screens

- `/model` selects an enabled cached model.
- `/skills` enables or disables discovered skills.
- `/settings` → Tools enables or disables tools, including Code Mode and Magi Control.
- `/subagents` enables or disables subagent profiles.
- `/mcp` approves discovered MCP servers.
- `/theme` previews and saves a theme.

These screens show Global and Project scope where supported.

## Temporary launch overrides

Launch flags such as `--provider`, `--model`, and `--theme` override saved choices for that process. Environment variables can also override selected settings. Use these for temporary runs, not durable configuration.
