## Purpose of this Document

This development log (devlog.md) serves as a comprehensive record of design decisions, implementation details, challenges faced, and solutions applied during the development of the lumin utility. 

This document should be updated whenever significant changes are made to the codebase. It acts as both documentation and knowledge transfer for future developers or AI agents working on this project.

The log is organized into sections:
- Core Features: Descriptions of main functionality modules
- Technical Considerations: Important technical design choices 
- Challenges and Solutions: Specific problems encountered and how they were solved
- Recent Changes: A chronological record of recent major updates
- Future Work: Planned enhancements and improvements

When asked to "update devlog.md", AI agents should:
1. Examine recent code changes and identify significant modifications
2. Document new features, refactorings, or significant bug fixes
3. Update relevant sections of this document
4. Add a new entry to the "Recent Changes" section with a timestamp

## Implementation Summary

This document describes the implementation of the lumin utility, focusing on design decisions, challenges encountered, and solutions applied.

## Core Features

### Search Functionality (`search/mod.rs`)
- **Description**: Searches for patterns in files using the `grep` crate
- **Key components**:
  - `SearchOptions`: Controls case sensitivity, gitignore respect, and context lines (before/after matches)
  - `SearchResult`: Contains matched file path, line number, content, and context indicators
  - `search_files()`: Main search function
  - `collect_files()`: Helper to gather files respecting gitignore settings

### Traverse Functionality (`traverse/mod.rs`)
- **Description**: Traverses directories and lists files using the `ignore` crate
- **Key components**:
  - `TraverseOptions`: Controls case sensitivity, gitignore respect, text-only filtering, and pattern matching
  - `TraverseResult`: Contains file path and file type
  - `is_hidden()`: Detects hidden files and files in hidden directories
  - `traverse_directory()`: Main directory traversal function
- **Pattern matching**:
  - Supports glob patterns (wildcards, character classes, brace expansion)
  - Supports substring patterns for simpler searches
  - Automatically selects appropriate matching strategy
  - Respects case sensitivity settings

### View Functionality (`view/mod.rs`)
- **Description**: Displays file contents with metadata using the `infer` crate
- **Key components**:
  - `ViewOptions`: Controls size limits and line filtering options
  - `FileView`: Structured output with file path, type, contents, and total line count
  - `FileContents`: Enum with variants for different types of content (text, binary, image)
  - `TextContent`: Container for line-by-line text content
  - `LineContent`: Represents a single line with number and content
  - `TextMetadata`, `BinaryMetadata`, `ImageMetadata`: Specialized metadata structures
  - `view_file()`: Main function for viewing files with optimized size checking

### CLI Interface (`main.rs`)
- **Description**: Command-line interface using the `clap` crate
- **Key components**:
  - `Cli`: Main CLI structure with subcommands
  - `Commands`: Enum of available commands (search, traverse, view)
  - Command-specific option handling

## Technical Considerations

### Error Handling
- Using `anyhow` crate for comprehensive error handling
- Context-rich error messages with `with_context` and `context` methods
- Proper propagation of errors using the `?` operator
- Early returns for validation errors

### File Type Detection
- Multi-layered approach to file type detection:
  1. Extension-based detection for common file types
  2. Content-based detection using the `infer` crate
  3. Heuristic text/binary detection as fallback
- Special handling for different file categories (text, image, binary)

### Gitignore Handling
- Comprehensive gitignore handling using the `ignore` crate
- Special attention to hidden files and directories
- Options to respect or ignore gitignore rules
- Proper handling of the `.hidden` builder flag (critical for test passing)

### Structured Type System
- Strong typing using enums and structs for different file content types
- Type-safe serialization using serde
- Clear separation of concerns between different file types (text, binary, image)

### Testing
- Comprehensive test suite with serial execution using `serial_test`
- Test setup/teardown using `TestEnvironment` with RAII pattern
- Tests for all edge cases:
  - Case sensitivity
  - Gitignore respect/ignore
  - Hidden files
  - Binary files
  - Size limits

## Challenges and Solutions

### Gitignore Handling
- **Challenge**: Proper handling of gitignore files, especially when toggling respect_gitignore flag
- **Solution**: 
  ```rust

- **Solution**: Enhanced the `is_hidden()` method to check both file name and path components:

### Test Pattern Matching
- **Challenge**: Making tests work with enum-based content types instead of direct JSON access
- **Solution**: Updated tests to use Rust's pattern matching:

## Recent Changes

### Fixed include_glob and exclude_glob Consistency Issue

Resolved a critical API inconsistency between `include_glob` and `exclude_glob` pattern matching in the search functionality:

**Problem**: The `include_glob` and `exclude_glob` parameters had different path handling behaviors:
- `exclude_glob` patterns were matched against relative paths (using `path.strip_prefix(directory)`)
- `include_glob` patterns were matched against absolute paths (using the full path from `entry.path()`)

This inconsistency caused confusion for users who expected both parameters to work with the same path format.

**Solution**: Modified the `collect_files` function in `search/mod.rs` to make `include_glob` consistent with `exclude_glob`:

**Impact**:
- Both `include_glob` and `exclude_glob` now work with relative paths consistently
- Users can use the same pattern format for both parameters
- No breaking changes - relative patterns continue to work as expected
- Improved API usability and reduced user confusion

**Testing**: Added comprehensive integration test (`test_include_glob_fix.rs`) to verify the consistent behavior and prevent regressions.

**Documentation**: Enhanced Rustdoc comments throughout the search module to clearly document the relative path behavior:
- Added detailed path matching behavior sections to both `include_glob` and `exclude_glob` field documentation
- Enhanced `collect_files` function documentation with examples showing relative path conversion
- Added consistency notes and historical context about the fix
- Included prominent documentation in the main `search_files` function about the unified behavior
- Added detailed inline comments in the implementation explaining the relative path conversion logic

**Consistency Verification**: Verified and documented that all glob pattern usage across the codebase now follows consistent relative path behavior:
- **Search module**: Both `include_glob` and `exclude_glob` use relative paths (after the fix)
- **Traverse module**: The `pattern` field in `TraverseOptions` already used relative paths consistently
- **Traverse common module**: Functions like `traverse_with_callback` and `collect_files_with_excludes` already used relative paths for `exclude_glob`
- **Updated documentation**: Enhanced Rustdoc comments across all modules to clearly document the unified relative path behavior
**Specification updates**: Updated `spec.md` to document the consistent behavior across all modules

**Version Bump**: Bumped version from `0.1.15` to `0.1.16` in both `Cargo.toml` and `flake.nix` to reflect this significant consistency improvement and API enhancement.

### Fixed Documentation Style and SearchOptions Structure Compatibility

Implemented fixes to address compatibility issues with the `SearchOptions` struct and improved documentation organization:

1. Fixed documentation style in `traverse/mod.rs`:
   - Converted inner doc comments (`//!`) to regular doc comments (`///`) for documentation after imports
   - Improved organization of module documentation
   - Fixed potential confusion in documentation structure

2. Updated `SearchOptions` usage in example code and tests:
   - Added the required `omit_path_prefix: None` field to all `SearchOptions` initializations in test examples
   - Ensured backward compatibility with code examples
   - Fixed all documentation tests to properly initialize the `SearchOptions` struct

3. Resolved import issues for `PathBuf`:
   - Removed duplicate imports in the `traverse` module
   - Added necessary imports in code examples
   - Ensured consistent import style throughout the codebase

These changes improved the robustness of the codebase, fixed all test failures, and ensured documentation examples reflect the current API requirements.

### Added Deterministic Sorting of Search Results

Enhanced the `SearchResult` type to provide consistent and deterministic ordering of search results based on file path and line number. This improvement ensures that search results are always presented in a predictable order, making it easier for users to navigate through results when there are multiple matches across different files.

Key changes:

1. Added a `sort_by_path_and_line` method to `SearchResult` that sorts the results first by file path (lexicographically) and then by line number within each file:

This change improves the user experience by providing a more predictable presentation of search results while maintaining backward compatibility with existing code.

### 2025-05-23: Fixed SearchResult Pagination Support
- Fixed the `split` method in `SearchResult` to properly extract result ranges
- Replaced non-existent `choice` function with proper iterator-based implementation
- Added comprehensive documentation for the method
- Changes:
  - Implemented proper 1-based indexing conversion for the `from` and `to` parameters
  - Used the standard Rust iterator pattern (skip/take) for cleaner, more readable code
  - Added safety measures to prevent panics with out-of-range indices
  - Ensured total count is preserved while subsetting the results

### 2025-05-22: Enhanced View Command with Line Count and Optimized Size Checking
- Added total line count information for text files with a new `total_line_num` field in `FileView`
- Optimized size checking in `view_file` for line-filtered content:
  - Skip initial size checks when line filtering is applied
  - Add size checks for the filtered content only
  - Enables viewing portions of files that would normally exceed size limits
- Changes:
  - Added `total_line_num: Option<usize>` field to `FileView` struct (Some for text files, None for binary/image)
  - Modified size checking logic to be more efficient with line filtering
  - Added more precise error messages for different size check scenarios
- Benefits:
  - Total line count is now available for text files, making it easier to navigate through file content
  - Clients can show line numbers relative to the total file size
  - More efficient viewing of large files when only a small portion is needed
  - Size limits are still enforced to prevent excessive memory usage
- Implementation details:
  - When line filters are applied, size checks now operate on the filtered content size
  - Added comprehensive tests to ensure the new behavior works correctly

### 2025-05-21: Added Before-Context Feature to Search Functionality
- Implemented before-context functionality similar to grep's -B option
- Changes:
  - Added `before_context` field to `SearchOptions` struct
  - Updated `SearcherBuilder` configuration to use grep's built-in before-context functionality
  - Enhanced test suite with specific before-context test cases and edge case handling
  - Added CLI option with `-B` shorthand for specifying before-context lines
