An individual piece of content within a ChatMessage.

Messages are composed of one or more blocks, allowing a single message to carry text alongside images, tool invocations, or reasoning traces.

Variants (Non-exhaustive)

Non-exhaustive enums could have additional variants added in future. Therefore, when matching against variants of non-exhaustive enums, an extra wildcard arm must be added to account for any future variants.

Text(String)

Plain text content.

Image

An inline image, either base64-encoded or referenced by URL.

Fields

media_type: String

MIME type, e.g. "image/png" or "image/jpeg".

data: ImageSource

The image payload.

ToolCall(ToolCall)

A tool invocation requested by the assistant.

ToolResult(ToolResult)

The result of executing a tool, sent back to the model.

Reasoning

An internal reasoning step (chain-of-thought) emitted by the model. Not all providers support this.
