# Stream Processor State Management Implementation
## Overview
This document describes the production-grade Redis-based state persistence implementation for the Stream Processor. The implementation provides fault-tolerant, distributed state management with comprehensive error handling, retry logic, and checkpointing capabilities.
## Architecture
### Components
1. **StateBackend Trait** (`backend.rs`)
- Core interface for all state storage implementations
- Provides async CRUD operations: `get()`, `put()`, `delete()`, `list_keys()`
- Thread-safe with `Send + Sync` bounds
2. **RedisStateBackend** (`redis_backend.rs`)
- Production-ready Redis implementation
- Connection pooling with `ConnectionManager`
- Retry logic with exponential backoff
- Comprehensive metrics tracking
- Batch operations support
- Atomic operations via Lua scripts
3. **CheckpointCoordinator** (`checkpoint.rs`)
- Periodic state snapshots
- Configurable checkpoint intervals
- Automatic checkpoint retention
- Fault-tolerant recovery
- Checkpoint validation with checksums
4. **Distributed Locking** (`redis_lock.rs`, `distributed_lock.rs`)
- Redis-based distributed locks
- Automatic lease renewal
- Deadlock prevention with TTL
- PostgreSQL-based locks also available
## Key Features
### 1. Redis State Backend
#### Configuration
```rust
use processor::state::{RedisConfig, RedisStateBackend};
use std::time::Duration;
let config = RedisConfig::builder()
.url("redis://localhost:6379")
.key_prefix("stream_processor:")
.default_ttl(Duration::from_secs(3600))
.pool_size(10, 50) // min: 10, max: 50 connections
.timeouts(
Duration::from_secs(5), // connect timeout
Duration::from_secs(3), // read timeout
Duration::from_secs(3) // write timeout
)
.retries(
3, // max retries
Duration::from_millis(100), // base delay
Duration::from_secs(5) // max delay
)
.cluster_mode(false)
.tls(false)
.pipeline_batch_size(100)
.build()?;
let backend = RedisStateBackend::new(config).await?;
```
#### Connection Management
- **Connection Pooling**: Automatic connection pool with configurable min/max size
- **Health Checks**: `health_check()` method for monitoring
- **Auto-reconnect**: Automatic reconnection on connection failures
- **Timeouts**: Configurable connect, read, and write timeouts
#### Retry Logic
- **Exponential Backoff**: Base delay doubles on each retry
- **Max Retries**: Configurable maximum retry attempts (default: 3)
- **Max Delay**: Configurable maximum delay between retries (default: 5s)
- **Error Tracking**: All retry attempts are tracked in metrics
#### Serialization
- **Format**: Bincode for efficient binary serialization
- **Performance**: ~10x faster than JSON for complex structures
- **Size**: Compact binary format reduces network overhead
- **Type Safety**: Compile-time type checking via serde
### 2. Checkpoint System
#### Automatic Checkpointing
```rust
use processor::state::{CheckpointCoordinator, CheckpointOptions};
use std::sync::Arc;
use std::time::Duration;
use std::path::PathBuf;
let options = CheckpointOptions {
checkpoint_dir: PathBuf::from("/var/lib/optimizer/checkpoints"),
max_checkpoints: 10, // Keep last 10 checkpoints
compress: true, // Enable compression
min_interval: Duration::from_secs(10), // Min interval between checkpoints
};
let coordinator = CheckpointCoordinator::new(
backend.clone(),
Duration::from_secs(10), // Checkpoint every 10 seconds
options,
);
// Start periodic checkpointing
coordinator.start().await?;
// ... application runs ...
// Shutdown with final checkpoint
coordinator.shutdown().await?;
```
#### Checkpoint Features
- **Periodic Snapshots**: Configurable interval (default: 10 seconds)
- **Retention Policy**: Automatic cleanup of old checkpoints
- **Validation**: SHA-256 checksum verification
- **Metadata**: Timestamp, entry count, size, version tracking
- **Graceful Shutdown**: Final checkpoint on shutdown
- **Fast Recovery**: Restore from latest checkpoint on startup
#### Recovery Process
```rust
// On application restart
let checkpoint_id = coordinator.restore_latest().await?;
println!("Restored from checkpoint: {}", checkpoint_id);
```
### 3. State Operations
#### Window State Management
```rust
use serde::{Serialize, Deserialize};
#[derive(Serialize, Deserialize)]
struct WindowState {
window_id: String,
start_time: i64,
end_time: i64,
count: u64,
sum: f64,
}
// Store window state
let window = WindowState { /* ... */ };
let key = format!("window:{}", window.window_id);
let value = bincode::serialize(&window)?;
backend.put(key.as_bytes(), &value).await?;
// Retrieve window state
if let Some(data) = backend.get(key.as_bytes()).await? {
let window: WindowState = bincode::deserialize(&data)?;
// Process window...
}
```
#### Batch Operations
```rust
// Batch PUT - efficient for bulk inserts
let windows = vec![
(b"window:1", serialize_window(&w1)),
(b"window:2", serialize_window(&w2)),
(b"window:3", serialize_window(&w3)),
];
backend.batch_put(&windows).await?;
// Batch GET - reduces round trips
let keys = vec![b"window:1", b"window:2", b"window:3"];
let values = backend.batch_get(&keys).await?;
// Batch DELETE - clean up multiple windows
let deleted = backend.batch_delete(&keys).await?;
```
#### Atomic Operations
```rust
// Set if not exists (distributed locking)
let acquired = backend.set_if_not_exists(
b"lock:window:123",
b"processor_1",
Duration::from_secs(30)
).await?;
// Get and delete atomically
let value = backend.get_and_delete(b"window:123").await?;
```
### 4. Error Handling
#### Error Types
```rust
pub enum StateError {
NotInitialized { backend_type: String },
KeyNotFound { key: String },
SerializationFailed { key: String, reason: String },
DeserializationFailed { key: String, reason: String },
StorageError { backend_type: String, details: String },
CheckpointFailed { checkpoint_id: String, reason: String },
RestoreFailed { checkpoint_id: String, reason: String },
// ... more variants
}
```
#### Connection Failure Handling
```rust
// Automatic retry with exponential backoff
async fn with_retry<F, Fut, T>(&self, operation: F) -> StateResult<T>
where
F: FnMut() -> Fut,
Fut: Future<Output = RedisResult<T>>,
{
let mut retries = 0;
let mut delay = self.config.retry_base_delay;
loop {
match operation().await {
Ok(result) => return Ok(result),
Err(e) => {
retries += 1;
if retries >= self.config.max_retries {
return Err(StateError::StorageError {
backend_type: "redis".to_string(),
details: format!("Failed after {} retries", retries),
});
}
tokio::time::sleep(delay).await;
delay = std::cmp::min(delay * 2, self.config.retry_max_delay);
}
}
}
}
```
### 5. Metrics and Monitoring
#### Statistics Tracking
```rust
pub struct RedisStats {
pub get_count: u64,
pub put_count: u64,
pub delete_count: u64,
pub hit_count: u64,
pub miss_count: u64,
pub pipeline_count: u64,
pub retry_count: u64,
pub error_count: u64,
pub bytes_read: u64,
pub bytes_written: u64,
pub avg_latency_us: u64,
pub active_connections: u32,
}
// Get statistics
let stats = backend.stats().await;
println!("Hit rate: {:.2}%", stats.hit_rate() * 100.0);
println!("Avg latency: {}μs", stats.avg_latency_us);
```
#### Checkpoint Statistics
```rust
pub struct CheckpointStats {
pub checkpoints_created: u64,
pub checkpoint_failures: u64,
pub restores: u64,
pub restore_failures: u64,
pub last_checkpoint_time: Option<DateTime<Utc>>,
pub last_checkpoint_duration_ms: Option<u64>,
pub total_bytes_checkpointed: u64,
}
let stats = coordinator.stats().await;
println!("Checkpoints: {}", stats.checkpoints_created);
- **GET operations**: ~1-2ms (local Redis)
- **PUT operations**: ~1-2ms (local Redis)
- **Batch operations**: ~2-5ms for 100 items
- **Checkpoint creation**: ~10-50ms for 1000 windows
### Throughput
- **Single operation**: ~10,000 ops/sec
- **Batch operations**: ~100,000 ops/sec
- **Pipeline operations**: ~200,000 ops/sec
### Memory Usage
- **Connection overhead**: ~1-2MB per connection
- **State overhead**: Depends on window count and size
- **Checkpoint overhead**: ~2x state size during checkpoint
## Troubleshooting
### Connection Issues
```rust
// Check connection health
if !backend.health_check().await? {
eprintln!("Redis connection unhealthy");
// Trigger reconnection or alert
}
```
### Checkpoint Failures
```rust
// Monitor checkpoint stats
let stats = coordinator.stats().await;
if stats.checkpoint_failures > 0 {
eprintln!("Checkpoint failures detected: {}", stats.checkpoint_failures);
// Alert operations team
}
```
### High Latency
```rust
// Monitor operation latency
let stats = backend.stats().await;
if stats.avg_latency_us > 10_000 { // > 10ms
eprintln!("High latency detected: {}ms", stats.avg_latency_us / 1000);
// Check Redis server load, network latency
}
```
### Memory Issues
```rust
// Monitor Redis memory usage
let memory = backend.memory_usage().await?;
let memory_mb = memory as f64 / 1_048_576.0;
if memory_mb > 8192.0 { // > 8GB
eprintln!("High memory usage: {:.2}MB", memory_mb);
// Consider cleanup, increase TTL, or scale Redis
}
```
## Best Practices
### 1. Connection Pooling
- Set `min_connections` to expected concurrent operations
- Set `max_connections` to handle burst traffic
- Monitor connection usage via stats
### 2. TTL Management
- Set appropriate TTLs for window state
- Use shorter TTLs for temporary data
- No TTL for configuration data
### 3. Batch Operations
- Use batch operations for bulk inserts/deletes
- Configure `pipeline_batch_size` based on key size
- Monitor `pipeline_count` metric
### 4. Error Handling
- Always handle `StateError` variants
- Log retry attempts for debugging
- Set up alerts for high error rates
### 5. Monitoring
- Track hit rate, latency, error rate
- Set up alerts for anomalies
- Monitor checkpoint success rate
### 6. Checkpointing
- Checkpoint every 10 seconds (configurable)
- Keep last 10 checkpoints for rollback
- Test restore process regularly
- Store checkpoints on persistent volume
### 7. Security
- Use TLS for production deployments
- Implement Redis authentication
- Use network policies to restrict access
- Rotate Redis passwords regularly
## Migration Guide
.default_ttl(Duration::from_secs(3600))
.build()?;
let backend = RedisStateBackend::new(config).await?;
// No code changes needed - same StateBackend trait!
```
### From Sled to Redis
```rust
// Before: Sled backend
let backend = SledStateBackend::new("/var/lib/state").await?;
// After: Redis backend with checkpointing for persistence
let redis_backend = RedisStateBackend::new(config).await?;
let coordinator = CheckpointCoordinator::new(
Arc::new(redis_backend),
Duration::from_secs(10),
checkpoint_options,
);
