Where an assignment puts its name. The two differ only inside an explicit definition, which is the only thing that has a local frame.

Variants

Local

J =., APL’s default inside a definition: the running definition’s own frame, discarded when it returns.

Global

J =:: the program’s names, visible to everything that runs later.

LocalDefault

APL ⍺←: the local frame, but only where the name has no value yet. A left argument that was supplied keeps the value it arrived with.
