# Phase 1: Pack Installation System - Implementation Summary
## Overview
Successfully implemented Phase 1 of the ggen v4.0 Pack Installation System roadmap: **Data Structures & Serialization**.
## What Was Implemented
### 1. Core Data Structures
**File**: `/Users/sac/ggen/crates/ggen-core/src/packs/lockfile.rs` (501 lines)
#### `PackLockfile`

### 2. File I/O Operations
Implemented methods:
- ✅ `PackLockfile::from_file(path)` - Load from `.ggen/packs.lock`
- ✅ `PackLockfile::save(path)` - Save with pretty JSON formatting
- ✅ Automatic directory creation for `.ggen/` folder
- ✅ Comprehensive error handling with context
### 3. Pack Management API
Implemented methods:
- ✅ `get_pack(pack_id)` - Query pack by ID
- ✅ `add_pack(pack_id, pack)` - Add/update pack (auto-updates timestamp)
- ✅ `remove_pack(pack_id)` - Remove pack from lockfile
- ✅ `validate()` - Validate lockfile consistency
### 4. Dependency Validation
Features:
- ✅ Validates all dependencies exist in lockfile
- ✅ Detects circular dependencies with recursive algorithm
- ✅ Provides clear error messages for validation failures
- ✅ Runs validation on load and before save
### 5. Display Implementation

### 7. Module Integration

- ✅ Updated `/Users/sac/ggen/crates/ggen-core/src/lib.rs` with public exports
- ✅ Re-exported types: `PackLockfile`, `LockedPack`, `PackSource`

## Next Steps (Phase 2)
This implementation provides the foundation for:
1. **Phase 2**: Pack Resolution Engine
- Use `PackLockfile` to track resolved packs
- Use `PackSource` to determine download strategy
- Use `dependencies` field for dependency resolution
2. **Phase 3**: Installation Engine
- Update lockfile after successful installs
- Verify integrity checksums
- Handle source-specific installation logic
3. **Phase 4**: CLI Integration
- `ggen pack install <pack-id>` - Add to lockfile
- `ggen pack list` - Display using `Display` trait
- `ggen pack verify` - Run `validate()` on lockfile
## Notes
- **Error Prevention**: Validation runs automatically on load/save
- **Determinism**: BTreeMap ensures consistent JSON output
- **Extensibility**: PackSource enum can add new source types
- **Type Safety**: Rust's type system prevents invalid states
- **Documentation**: Comprehensive rustdoc with examples
