{'data': 'deep learning'}
]
);
```
**Returns:** Array of 1024-dimensional float vectors
### Filtering Functions
#### `llm_filter(model_config, prompt_config, context_columns)`
Filters data based on LLM evaluation.
```sql
-- Filter items matching criteria
SELECT llm_filter(
{'model_name': 'coder'},
{'prompt_name': 'filter_prompt'},
[{'data': 'Is this a programming language?'}]
);
-- Custom evaluation prompt
SELECT llm_filter(
{'model_name': 'coder'},
{
'prompt_name': 'custom_filter',
'context_columns': [{'data': 'Evaluate: {{text}}'}]
},
[{'data': 'Python is great for data science'}]
);
```
**Returns:** Boolean indicating whether item matches criteria
## Prompt Management
### Creating Prompts
```sql
-- Create completion prompt
CREATE PROMPT('completion_prompt', 'Complete this text: {{text}}');
-- Create question-answering prompt
CREATE PROMPT('qa_prompt', 'Answer this question: {{text}}');
-- Create filter prompt
CREATE PROMPT('filter_prompt', 'Answer yes or no: {{text}}');

### Parameter Substitution
Prompts support **parameter substitution** using `{{parameter}}` syntax:
```sql
-- Template with parameters
CREATE PROMPT('translate', 'Translate "{{text}}" to {{language}}');
-- Usage with substitution
SELECT llm_complete(
{'model_name': 'coder'},
{
'prompt_name': 'translate',
'context_columns': [
{'text': 'Hello world', 'language': 'Spanish'}
]
}
);
```

-- DuckDBFailure: Model 'missing_model' not found
```
**Solution:** Verify model creation and Ollama connectivity
```sql
-- Check available models
GET MODELS;
-- Test Ollama connectivity
SELECT 'Ollama is running' WHERE EXISTS (
SELECT 1 FROM duckdb_secrets() WHERE secret_name = 'ollama_secret'
);
```
#### Network Connection Issues
```sql
-- Error: Network connection failed
SELECT llm_complete({'model_name': 'coder'}, {...});
-- DuckDBFailure: Failed to connect to Ollama
```
**Solution:** Verify Ollama server status and network connectivity
```bash
# Check Ollama status
curl -s http://localhost:11434/api/version
# Check models
curl -s http://localhost:11434/api/tags
```
#### Prompt Not Found
```sql
-- Error: Prompt not found
SELECT llm_complete({'model_name': 'coder'}, {'prompt_name': 'missing_prompt'});
-- DuckDBFailure: Prompt 'missing_prompt' not found
```
**Solution:** Create required prompts or check prompt names
```sql
-- List available prompts
GET PROMPTS;
-- Create missing prompt
CREATE PROMPT('missing_prompt', 'Process this text: {{text}}');
```
## Advanced Usage Patterns
### RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)
```sql
-- 1. Generate embeddings for knowledge base
CREATE TABLE knowledge_base AS
SELECT
content,
llm_embedding(
{'model_name': 'embedder'},
[{'data': content}]
) as embedding
FROM documents;
-- 2. Search for relevant context
CREATE TABLE relevant_docs AS
SELECT content
FROM knowledge_base
WHERE array_distance(
embedding,
(SELECT llm_embedding(
{'model_name': 'embedder'},
[{'data': 'What is machine learning?'}]
))
) < 0.3;
-- 3. Generate answer using context
SELECT llm_complete(
{'model_name': 'coder'},
{
'prompt_name': 'rag_prompt',
'context_columns': [
{'data': 'Context: ' || string_agg(content, ' ') || ' Question: What is machine learning?'}
]
}
) as answer
FROM relevant_docs;
```
### Batch Processing
```sql
-- Process multiple items efficiently
CREATE TABLE batch_results AS
SELECT
item,
llm_filter(
{'model_name': 'coder'},
{'prompt_name': 'classifier'},
[{'data': item}]
) as is_relevant
FROM input_data;
```
### Similarity Search
```sql
-- Find similar documents
SELECT
content,
array_distance(
embedding,
(SELECT embedding FROM query_embedding)
) as similarity
FROM document_embeddings
ORDER BY similarity
LIMIT 10;
```
## Integration Examples
### Rust Integration
```rust
use duckdb::Connection;
// Connect to DuckDB
let conn = Connection::open_in_memory()?;
// Install and load Flock
conn.execute_batch("INSTALL flock FROM community; LOAD flock;")?;
// Create models and prompts
conn.execute("CREATE MODEL('coder', 'qwen3-coder:30b', 'ollama')", [])?;
conn.execute("CREATE PROMPT('complete', 'Complete: {{text}}')", [])?;
// Use LLM functions
let result: String = conn.query_row(
"SELECT llm_complete({'model_name': 'coder'}, {'prompt_name': 'complete', 'context_columns': [{'data': 'Hello'}]})",
[],
|row| row.get(0),
)?;
```
### CLI Pipeline
```bash
#!/bin/bash
# rag_pipeline.sh
# Setup environment
source ../prebuilt/setup_env.sh
# Generate embeddings for knowledge base
frozen-duckdb embed --input knowledge.txt --output embeddings.json
# Search for relevant information
QUERY="Explain neural networks"
frozen-duckdb search --query "$QUERY" --corpus knowledge.txt --format json
# Generate comprehensive answer
## Troubleshooting
### Setup Issues
#### Ollama Not Running
```bash
# Check Ollama status
curl -s http://localhost:11434/api/version
# Start Ollama if needed
ollama serve
# Pull required models
ollama pull qwen3-coder:30b
ollama pull qwen3-embedding:8b
```
#### Flock Extension Not Loading
```sql
-- Check extension status
SELECT extension_name, loaded FROM duckdb_extensions() WHERE extension_name = 'flock';
-- Try alternative installation
INSTALL flock FROM community;
LOAD flock;
-- Check for conflicts
SELECT * FROM duckdb_settings() WHERE name LIKE '%flock%';
```
### Runtime Issues
#### Model Resolution Failures
**Symptoms:** `Model not found` errors despite model creation
**Possible Causes:**
1. **Secret configuration**: Ollama secret not properly created
2. **Model registry**: Models created but not accessible
3. **Network issues**: Ollama server connectivity problems
**Debug Steps:**
```sql
-- Check secrets
SELECT * FROM duckdb_secrets();
-- Check models
GET MODELS;
-- Test basic connectivity
SELECT 'Ollama connected' WHERE EXISTS (
SELECT 1 FROM duckdb_secrets() WHERE secret_name = '__default_ollama'
);
```
#### Performance Issues
**Symptoms:** Slow LLM operations or timeouts
**Optimization Strategies:**
1. **Model selection**: Use smaller models for faster responses
2. **Batch processing**: Process multiple items together
3. **Connection pooling**: Reuse connections when possible
4. **Network optimization**: Ensure fast local network to Ollama
**Performance Monitoring:**
```sql
-- Monitor operation timing
SELECT
'completion' as operation,
llm_complete({'model_name': 'coder'}, {'prompt_name': 'test'}) as result;
-- Check system resources
SELECT * FROM pragma_memory_usage();
```
## Limitations and Known Issues
### Current Limitations
#### Test Success Rate
- **Core functionality**: 100% test pass rate (30/30 tests)
- **Flock extension**: 36% test pass rate (4/11 tests)
- **Known issues**: Model resolution, prompt management
#### Unsupported Operations
- **Multi-turn conversations**: Single completion per request
- **Streaming responses**: Complete responses only
- **Custom model loading**: Only pre-configured models supported
- **Advanced prompt engineering**: Basic template substitution only
### Workarounds
#### Model Resolution Issues
**Problem:** Models created successfully but not found during function calls
**Workaround:** Use direct Ollama API calls instead of Flock extension
```rust
// Direct Ollama integration
use reqwest::Client;
async fn direct_completion(text: &str) -> Result<String> {
let client = Client::new();
let response = client
.post("http://localhost:11434/api/generate")
.json(&serde_json::json!({
"model": "qwen3-coder:30b",
"prompt": text
}))
.send()
.await?;
let result: serde_json::Value = response.json().await?;
Ok(result["response"].as_str().unwrap_or("").to_string())
}
```
#### Prompt Management Issues
**Problem:** Prompts created but not accessible by LLM functions
**Workaround:** Use inline prompts or external prompt management
```sql
-- Inline prompt approach
SELECT llm_complete(
{'model_name': 'coder'},
{
'prompt_name': 'inline_prompt',
'context_columns': [{'data': 'Complete this text: What is Rust?'}]
}
);
```
