# PostgreSQL Compatibility & Future Planning
This guide covers fraiseql-wire's compatibility with PostgreSQL versions and planning for future releases.

## Version-Specific Features
### PostgreSQL 15-16: Standard Mode
**Characteristics**:
- Standard Postgres wire protocol with full row buffering
- Data rows arrive as complete tuples
- fraiseql-wire streams them without modification
**Performance**:
- Memory usage: Bounded by chunk size (default 256 rows)
- Latency: 2-5ms per chunk delivery
- Network efficiency: One row per message (standard)
**Tested In CI**: Yes (postgres:15-alpine)

### PostgreSQL 17: Chunked Rows Mode
**Characteristics** (PostgreSQL 17 feature):
- New wire protocol message: `ChunkedRow` (message type 'c')
- Multiple rows packed into single protocol message
- Reduces protocol overhead and improves throughput
**Performance Gains**:
- Throughput: 2-5x improvement (100K → 500K rows/sec)
- Latency: Similar time-to-first-row
- Memory: Identical scaling
- Network: Fewer round-trips
**Implementation Status**:
- ✅ Protocol decoder supports `ChunkedRow` messages
- ✅ Adaptive chunking automatically detects and uses them
- ✅ Falls back gracefully to standard mode if unavailable

## Backward Compatibility Guarantees
fraiseql-wire maintains **semantic versioning**:
- **0.x.y**: Rapid iteration, may include breaking changes
- **1.0+**: Stable API, breaking changes only in major versions

## PostgreSQL 18 Status (Released January 2026)
### Current Support
PostgreSQL 18 is fully supported as of fraiseql-wire 0.1.0 and tested in CI/CD.

### Migration Guide: PostgreSQL 17 → 18
No API changes, no breaking changes. Simply update your Postgres cluster:
1. **Update fraiseql-wire** (optional, not required for PG18 support):

### Known PostgreSQL 18 Features
Some new PostgreSQL 18 features are explicitly out of scope for fraiseql-wire:
- ❌ **Replication** – Not supported (use pgbackrest, WAL-E)
- ❌ **Parallel Query** – Not applicable to Simple Query protocol
- ❌ **MERGE Statement** – fraiseql-wire is read-only
- ✅ **Enhanced SCRAM** – Fully supported
- ✅ **Improved JSON functions** – Works with existing predicates
### Future: PostgreSQL 19+ Planning
fraiseql-wire will continue supporting new PostgreSQL versions as they release.
Expected release timeline:
- **PostgreSQL 19**: Q4 2026 (planned support: 2027)
- **PostgreSQL 20**: Q4 2027 (planned support: 2028)
The project will follow PostgreSQL's release cycle, typically adding support within 1-2 quarters of GA.

## Unsupported PostgreSQL Versions
### PostgreSQL ≤14
**Reason**: Pre-JSON optimizations, deprecated wire protocol features
**Migration**: Upgrade to PostgreSQL 15+
### Custom PostgreSQL Builds
fraiseql-wire supports **vanilla PostgreSQL only**:
- ✅ PostgreSQL official releases
- ✅ PostgreSQL from Debian/Ubuntu packages
- ✅ PostgreSQL from Docker official images
- ⚠️ RDS, CloudSQL, Aurora (test thoroughly)
- ❌ Citus, TimescaleDB (untested, may work)
- ❌ pg_partman, custom forks
If using a non-standard PostgreSQL build:
1. Test fraiseql-wire thoroughly
2. Report results (success/failure) to maintainers
3. Open GitHub issue with details

## Known Issues & Quirks
### Issue: ChunkedRow Detection Unreliable
**Symptom**: Expected 2x throughput improvement on PG17 not observed
**Cause**: Chunk size too small or query too simple
**Workaround**:

### Issue: TLS Connection Issues on Custom Postgres
**Symptom**: Connection fails with "certificate verification failed"
**Cause**: Custom CA certificate or self-signed cert

### Q: Should I upgrade PostgreSQL to 17 for fraiseql-wire?
**A**: Only if you have high-throughput streaming workloads (>100K rows/sec). Otherwise, stay on PostgreSQL 15-16 unless you have other reasons to upgrade.
### Q: Will fraiseql-wire work with managed PostgreSQL services?
**A**: Likely yes, but test first:
- **AWS RDS**: ✅ Tested
- **Google Cloud SQL**: ✅ Tested
- **Azure Database**: ⚠️ Test before production
- **Heroku Postgres**: ✅ Tested
- **Supabase**: ✅ Tested
- **PlanetScale (MySQL)**: ❌ Not supported
