### Testing Philosophy
Engram adopts a **zero-trust validation** approach inspired by:
- **SQLite:** Malformed data testing, 100% branch coverage goal
- **Git:** Cryptographic integrity, fsck-style repository validation
- **Borg Backup:** Repository corruption detection, authenticated encryption
- **IPFS:** Content-addressable integrity verification
**Core Principles:**
1. **Paranoid Validation:** Every byte read is validated against checksums/signatures
2. **Fail-Safe Defaults:** Archives are read-only; corruption never writes back
3. **Cryptographic Integrity:** Ed25519 signatures are mandatory for trust
4. **Defensive Parsing:** All inputs treated as potentially malicious
5. **Reproducible Builds:** Same content always produces same archive (excluding timestamps)
---
## Phase 1: Critical (Security & Data Integrity)
**Timeline:** 2-3 weeks
**Priority:** BLOCKER - Must complete before 1.0 release
**Focus:** Corruption detection, fuzzing, signature security

### 4.4 Side-Channel Considerations
**Test File:** `tests/security_side_channels.rs`
```rust
#[test]
fn test_constant_time_key_comparison() {
// Password comparison should be constant-time
let correct_password = "secret_password_123";
let wrong_password_close = "secret_password_124"; // Off by one
let wrong_password_far = "completely_wrong";
let archive = create_encrypted_archive(&[("file.txt", b"data")], correct_password);
// Time each decryption attempt
let time_correct = measure_time(|| Engram::open_with_key(archive, correct_password));
let time_close = measure_time(|| Engram::open_with_key(archive, wrong_password_close));
let time_far = measure_time(|| Engram::open_with_key(archive, wrong_password_far));
// All should fail in roughly same time
let max_deviation = time_correct.as_micros() as f64 * 0.15; // 15% tolerance
assert!((time_close.as_micros() as f64 - time_far.as_micros() as f64).abs() < max_deviation);
}
#[test]
fn test_memory_access_pattern() {
// Reading encrypted vs unencrypted should have similar access patterns
// This is a documentation test - note that AES-GCM is already constant-time
}
## Test Implementation Guide
### Dependencies to Add
**Add to `Cargo.toml`:**
```toml
[dev-dependencies]
# Existing
tempfile = "3.8"
# Add for testing
proptest = "1.4" # Property-based testing
quickcheck = "1.0" # Alternative property testing
criterion = "0.5" # Benchmarking
rand = "0.8" # Random data generation
[profile.bench]
opt-level = 3
lto = true
```
**Add fuzzing:**
```bash
cargo install cargo-fuzz
cargo fuzz init
```
## Success Metrics
### Coverage Targets
- **Line Coverage:** 85%+ (aiming for SQLite-level coverage)
- **Branch Coverage:** 75%+
- **Fuzzing:** 1M+ executions without crashes per target
- **Stress Tests:** All pass on 10GB archives, 10K files
### Performance Baselines
- **Archive Creation:** < 100ms for 1000 small files
- **Random Access:** < 1ms per file read (cached central directory)
- **Compression:** LZ4 > 300 MB/s, Zstd > 50 MB/s
- **VFS SQLite:** < 10% overhead vs native SQLite
### Security Checklist
- [ ] All signature verification tests pass
- [ ] Fuzzing finds no crashes after 1M executions
- [ ] No timing leaks in crypto operations
- [ ] Path traversal attempts blocked
- [ ] Decompression bombs detected
- [ ] Memory usage stays bounded on large archives
- [ ] No temp file leaks in VFS
### Reliability Checklist
- [ ] Concurrent access tests pass (100 threads)
- [ ] Crash recovery handled gracefully
- [ ] Corruption detection works for all components
- [ ] No data races (tested with ThreadSanitizer)
- [ ] No memory leaks (tested with Valgrind/LSAN)
## Continuous Improvement
### Quarterly Review
- Analyze fuzzing findings
- Update tests based on bug reports
- Add regression tests for all fixed bugs
- Benchmark performance changes
### Tools to Monitor
- **cargo-audit**: Security vulnerabilities in dependencies
- **cargo-outdated**: Keep dependencies current
- **cargo-deny**: License and security policy enforcement
### Community Contributions
- All new features must include tests
- PRs require >80% coverage
- Fuzzing seeds contributed to fuzz/seeds/
---
**Document Maintenance:**
- Update this plan when new features added
- Track completion status per phase
- Review quarterly for relevance
