# Security Considerations
Best practices for secure LLM integration with edgequake-llm.

## API Key Management
### Environment Variables
**Never hardcode API keys in source code.** Use environment variables:

### Key Rotation
Implement key rotation without code changes:

**Best practices:**
1. Rotate keys every 90 days
2. Revoke keys immediately if compromised
3. Use different keys for dev/staging/production
4. Monitor key usage in provider dashboards
### Secret Management
For production deployments, use a secrets manager:

## Input Validation
### Prompt Injection Prevention
LLMs can be manipulated through malicious input. Mitigate by:
1. **Input sanitization**

## Data Privacy
### Sensitive Data Handling
**Never send sensitive data to cloud LLM providers:**

For sensitive workloads, use local providers:

### Logging and Observability
By default, prompts are **not** logged. Enable content capture only when needed:

**Warning**: Enabling content capture may expose sensitive data in logs.

## Network Security
### TLS/HTTPS
All built-in providers use HTTPS by default. The library validates TLS certificates.
For self-signed certificates (development only):

## Incident Response
### Key Compromise
If an API key is compromised:
1. **Immediately rotate** the key in provider dashboard
2. **Update** environment variables/secrets
3. **Audit** recent API calls for unauthorized usage
4. **Review** billing for unexpected charges
5. **Investigate** how the key was exposed
### Prompt Injection Detected
If prompt injection is suspected:
1. **Log** the malicious input
2. **Block** the source if identifiable
3. **Review** responses for data leakage
4. **Strengthen** input validation
5. **Report** to security team
