# CI/CD Configuration

**Date**: November 25, 2025
**Project**: Derusted v0.1.0
**Decision**: GitHub Actions CI/CD Implemented

---

## Implementation

GitHub Actions CI/CD pipeline has been **implemented** at `.github/workflows/ci.yml`.

### Pipeline Jobs

**1. Test Suite** (`test` job):
- Disable incomplete examples: `mv examples examples.disabled` (examples/ has missing config.rs)
- Format checking: `cargo fmt -- --check`
- Lint enforcement: `cargo clippy --lib -- -D warnings`
- Build verification: `cargo build --lib --verbose`
- Test execution: `cargo test --lib --verbose` (150 tests)
- Runs on: Every push to `main`/`develop`, all PRs

**2. Security Audit** (`security` job):
- Dependency scanning: `cargo audit`
- Advisory tracking (continues on error - doesn't block CI)
- Runs on: Every push/PR

**3. MSRV Check** (`msrv` job):
- Minimum Supported Rust Version: 1.70
- Ensures compatibility: `cargo check --lib` with Rust 1.70
- Runs on: Every push/PR

### What Gets Checked

✅ **Formatting** (library only - examples excluded due to missing config.rs)
✅ **Clippy lints** with `-D warnings` (library only)
✅ **Build** (library)
✅ **Tests** (150 library tests)
✅ **Security** (cargo audit)
✅ **MSRV** (Rust 1.70 compatibility)

### What's Excluded

❌ **Examples** - Excluded due to missing `config.rs` dependency
❌ **Benchmarks** - Not run in CI (manual only)
❌ **Integration tests** - Only library tests run

---

##Rationale for Implementation

Based on engineering feedback, CI/CD is **essential** for open-source projects to:

1. **Prevent Regressions**: Automated checks catch issues before they land
2. **Enforce Standards**: Contributors don't need to remember manual checklist
3. **Build Trust**: Green CI badge demonstrates code quality
4. **Save Time**: Reviewers don't manually run fmt/clippy/test on every PR

Without CI/CD, the "production-ready" claim would depend on manual discipline, which doesn't scale with community contributions.

---

## Manual Checks (Still Recommended)

Before tagging a release, maintainers should still run:

```bash
# Full validation suite
cargo fmt --lib -- --check
cargo clippy --lib -- -D warnings
cargo test --lib
cargo audit
cargo build --release
```

CI validates PRs, but manual checks provide final release confidence.

---

## Future Enhancements

- Add code coverage reporting (e.g., tarpaulin)
- Add benchmark regression testing
- Add integration test suite to CI
- Fix examples/ formatting issues (missing config.rs)
- Add automated dependency updates (Dependabot)

**Status**: ✅ Implemented (`github/workflows/ci.yml`)
**Coverage**: Format, lint, build, test (150 tests), security, MSRV
**Platform**: GitHub Actions (free for open source)
