# Optimizing Bowyer-Watson Algorithms with FacetCacheProvider
## Status: ✅ PHASE 2 - IMPLEMENTED (v0.4.4 - September 2025)
## Overview
### Part of Phase 2: Key-Based Internal APIs Optimization (COMPLETED)
This document describes the completed implementation of FacetCacheProvider optimization for the Bowyer-Watson algorithms.
The optimization was successfully implemented and released in **v0.4.4** (September 2025) as part of PR #86,
eliminating redundant facet-to-cells mapping computations in hot paths.
**Rationale for Phase 2**: This optimization eliminates redundant computation in hot paths (facet mapping rebuilds),
which aligns with Phase 2's goal of optimizing internal operations and eliminating unnecessary lookups/computations.
**Implementation Status**: ✅ COMPLETED and RELEASED in v0.4.4 (September 2025)
- Implementation locations: `src/core/algorithms/robust_bowyer_watson.rs` and `src/core/algorithms/bowyer_watson.rs`
## Implementation Results
### ✅ Algorithms Now Using `FacetCacheProvider`
- **`ConvexHull`** - Properly implements and uses the caching trait for optimal performance during visibility testing operations
- **`IncrementalBowyerWatson`** - ✅ IMPLEMENTED - Caching eliminates redundant facet mappings
- **`RobustBowyerWatson`** - ✅ IMPLEMENTED - Caching optimizes fallback strategies
### Previous Issues (Now Resolved)
#### 1. Bowyer-Watson Algorithm Implementations
Both `IncrementalBowyerWatson` and `RobustBowyerWatson` algorithms repeatedly call `tds.build_facet_to_cells_map()` without caching:
**`IncrementalBowyerWatson` (src/core/algorithms/bowyer_watson.rs):**
- Lines 372, 380, 388: In `count_boundary_facets()`, `count_internal_facets()`, `count_invalid_facets()`
- Lines 453, 525, 592: In diagnostic and test methods
- **Impact**: Test helper functions rebuild mapping multiple times per test
**`RobustBowyerWatson` (src/core/algorithms/robust_bowyer_watson.rs):**
- Lines 682, 694: In `build_validated_facet_mapping()`
- Line 801: In `find_visible_boundary_facets()`
- **Impact**: Core algorithm methods rebuild mappings during vertex insertion
#### 2. InsertionAlgorithm Trait Implementations
- Line 654 in `find_cavity_boundary_facets()` method
- Used by both Bowyer-Watson algorithms during cavity-based insertion
- **Impact**: Every cavity-based vertex insertion rebuilds the facet mapping
#### 3. Boundary Analysis Operations
- Multiple calls to `is_boundary_facet()` rebuild mapping each time
- Available optimized `is_boundary_facet_with_map()` method underutilized
- **Impact**: Inefficient boundary analysis patterns in algorithm implementations
## Performance Impact
### Current Cost per Operation
- **Cache miss**: O(cells × facets_per_cell) - Rebuilds entire mapping
- **Typical cost**: For 1000 cells in 3D: ~4000 facet computations per rebuild
- **Memory allocation**: New HashMap allocation for each rebuild
### With Caching
- **Cache hit**: O(1) - Returns cached mapping if TDS generation matches
- **Memory efficiency**: Single shared Arc-wrapped instance
- **Thread safety**: Atomic cache updates prevent race conditions
### Scenarios with High Impact
1. **Large triangulations** (>1000 cells): Dramatic performance improvement
2. **Algorithms with multiple boundary queries**: ConvexHull already demonstrates this
3. **Test suites**: Diagnostic functions perform many boundary analyses per test
4. **Robust insertion algorithms**: Multiple fallback strategies require repeated facet mapping access

> **Note on AtomicU64 Ownership**: We use `Arc<AtomicU64>` here to enable sharing the generation counter across
> cloned algorithm instances. If your use case only involves mutation via methods on `&self` and you never need

### Phase 4: Cache Invalidation Strategy
#### 4.1 Automatic Invalidation
The `FacetCacheProvider` trait automatically handles cache invalidation based on the TDS generation counter.
The TDS generation counter is incremented by the following operations:
- **Vertex insertion**: `add_vertex()` methods
- **Cell insertion**: `add_cell()` and related cell creation methods
- **Neighbor assignment**: `assign_neighbors()` and neighbor update operations
- **Triangulation finalization**: `finalize_triangulation()` and validation methods
- **Bulk operations**: Any method that modifies the TDS structure
#### 4.2 Manual Invalidation (if needed)
For algorithms that modify the TDS and need immediate cache invalidation:

`Result<BoundaryFacetsIter<'_, T, U, V, D>, TriangulationValidationError>`
providing iterator-based access over `FacetView` objects instead of materialized `Vec<Facet>`
- **`BoundaryAnalysis::number_of_boundary_facets()`** - Now returns `Result<usize, TriangulationValidationError>` instead of `usize`
- **`BoundaryAnalysis::is_boundary_facet()`** - Now takes `&FacetView` and returns
`Result<bool, TriangulationValidationError>` instead of `bool`. Also provides
`is_boundary_facet_with_map()` variant for efficient batch operations
- **Facet map builder** - `build_facet_to_cells_map()` now returns `Result<FacetToCellsMap, TriangulationValidationError>` for better error handling
