## Architecture Highlights

### Message Flow

```
Client A (on Server 1) ──[WSS]──> Server 1
                                [Protocol Handler]
                          [TCP/Message Serialization]
                                Server 2 <──[TCP]──> Server 1
                                [Protocol Handler]
                          [Message Deserialization]
                        [Heartbeat Service Updates Registry]
                        Registry marks peer as Healthy
```

### Heartbeat Lifecycle

1. `HeartbeatService::start()` spawns background task
2. Task periodically queries `PeerRegistry` for all peers
3. For each peer:
   - Sends `HeartbeatPing` via `ProtocolHandler`
   - On success: marks heartbeat received in registry
   - On failure: marks heartbeat missed (registry updates status)
4. Peer status transitions managed by registry
5. Server can check cluster health via `get_cluster_status()`

### Error Handling Strategy

- **Network errors**: Converted to String messages
- **Timeout errors**: Separate handling (automatic retry)
- **Serialization errors**: Caught and reported clearly
- **Size validation**: Prevents oversized message DoS
- **Connection failures**: Marked in connection pool for retry

## Integration Points

Phase 6b integrates with:
- **Phase 6a**: Uses `PeerRegistry`, `ConnectionPool`, `PeerInfo`
- **Phase 6c**: Message types ready for service state sync
- **Phase 6d**: Heartbeat provides failure detection mechanism
- **Phase 6e**: Message envelope supports session metadata
- **Phase 6f**: Sequence numbers support ordering

## Design Decisions

### Message Framing

- 4-byte big-endian length prefix followed by message
- Simple, efficient, TCP-friendly
- Allows incremental reading

### Heartbeat Architecture

- Separate service from protocol handler
- Registry-based peer discovery
- Non-blocking background task
- Configurable intervals and timeouts

### Error Types

- Used `String` errors for lightweight protocol layer
- Can upgrade to rich error types in future
- Clear error messages for debugging

### Timeouts

- Read/write timeouts prevent hanging connections
- Message timeouts prevent queue buildup
- Configurable via `ProtocolConfig`

## Code Quality

- ✅ Comprehensive unit test coverage (15 new tests)
- ✅ Clear documentation on all public items
- ✅ Consistent error handling patterns
- ✅ Zero compiler warnings
- ✅ Follows Commy architecture guidelines
- ✅ Proper async/await patterns throughout
- ✅ JSON serialization tested
- ✅ Message type tests covering all variants

## Performance Notes

- Protocol handler: O(1) message send/receive
- Heartbeat service: O(n) where n = peer count (every 30s)
- Message serialization: Negligible overhead (serde is fast)
- TCP overhead: Minimal (4-byte length prefix only)
- Memory usage: Configurable via `buffer_size`
