## Architecture Highlights
### Peer Lifecycle Management
- Peers start in `Healthy` state
- After 2 consecutive missed heartbeats → `Suspected` state
- After 5 consecutive missed heartbeats → `Down` state
- Any successful heartbeat → Back to `Healthy` state
### Cluster Health Monitoring
- `ClusterStatus` provides real-time cluster snapshot
- `is_degraded` flag indicates operational issues
- `is_quorum_available()` checks consensus quorum (>50% healthy)
- Supports graceful degradation for fault tolerance
### Connection Management
- `ConnectionPool` maintains persistent connections between servers
- Tracks connection state and attempt counts
- Reuses connections across requests
- Provides active connection enumeration
## Design Decisions
1. **Static Peer Discovery (Phase 6a)**
- Simple, predictable, no external dependencies
- Suitable for small to medium clusters
- Can be extended with service registry in Phase 6b
2. **Heartbeat State Machine**
- 2-miss threshold for suspected (avoids flapping)
- 5-miss threshold for down (conservative, allows recovery)
- Configurable via `heartbeat_interval` and `heartbeat_timeout`
3. **Simple Error Handling**
- Uses `Result<T, String>` for lightweight error reporting
- Can be upgraded to rich error types later
- Errors clearly indicate missing peers/connections
4. **Metrics Tracking**
- Per-peer bytes sent/received tracking
- Foundation for bandwidth monitoring
- Can be extended for throughput analysis
## Integration Points
Phase 6a is ready for integration with:
- **Phase 6b**: Define protocol for heartbeats and peer communication
- **Phase 6c**: Use registry to coordinate state transfers
- **Phase 6d**: Monitor peer status for client failover
- **Phase 6e**: Use registry for session routing
- **Phase 6f**: Leverage `ClusterStatus` for consistency decisions
## Next Steps: Phase 6b (Inter-Server Communication)
Will implement:
1. **messages.rs**: Define server-to-server protocol message types
- Heartbeat (ping/pong)
- Service state sync request/response
- Client migration notification
- Metadata exchange
2. **Protocol Handler**: Handle incoming/outgoing inter-server messages
- TCP listener for peer connections
- Message serialization/deserialization
- Error handling and reconnection logic
3. **Connection Lifecycle**: Manage peer connections
- Establish TCP connections on demand
- Reconnection with exponential backoff
- Graceful shutdown and cleanup
## Code Quality
- ✅ Comprehensive unit test coverage (19 tests)
- ✅ Clear documentation comments on all public items
- ✅ Consistent error handling patterns
- ✅ Zero compiler warnings
- ✅ Follows Commy architecture guidelines
- ✅ Proper use of `Arc<RwLock<T>>` for thread-safe shared state
- ✅ Tokio async/await patterns throughout
## Performance Notes
- All operations O(log n) in HashMap operations
- RwLock allows concurrent reads from multiple peers
- Metrics tracking has minimal overhead
- Connection pool reuses established connections
## Future Enhancements
1. **Dynamic Peer Discovery**: Replace static list with service registry
2. **Connection Pooling**: Add connection reuse with lease timeouts
3. **Metrics**: Add prometheus-compatible metrics export
4. **Monitoring**: Add logging for peer state transitions
5. **Resilience**: Add circuit breaker for failing peers

**Status**: ✅ PHASE 6A COMPLETE - Ready for Phase 6b
**Test Coverage**: 72/72 passing (100%)
**Code Size**: ~650 lines of new code + comprehensive tests
**Compilation**: 0 warnings ✅
