# Code Quality Improvements Summary

This document summarizes the major maintainability, test-friendliness, and performance improvements implemented in the codesearch project.

Three high-priority maintainability improvements were successfully implemented:
1. **Parameter Object Pattern** - Reduced function complexity
2. **Trait Abstractions** - Improved testability and extensibility
3. **Custom Error Types** - Better error handling and debugging

## 1. Parameter Object Pattern (SearchOptions)
### Problem
The `search_code()` function had **13 parameters**, exceeding the recommended limit of 7:
- Hard to maintain and extend
- Error-prone (easy to mix up parameter order)
- Difficult to add new options
### Solution
Created `SearchOptions` struct to bundle related parameters.

## 2. Trait Abstractions for Testability
### Problem
- Direct function calls made testing difficult
- Hard to mock dependencies
- No clear contracts for different implementations
- Difficult to extend with new strategies
### Solution
Created trait-based abstractions for core components.

## 3. Custom Error Types
### Problem
- Generic `Box<dyn std::error::Error>` provided no type information
- Hard to handle specific error cases
- Poor error messages for debugging
- No error context or source chains
### Solution
Created specific error types using `thiserror` crate.
