## Goal

Close all test coverage gaps identified by the MAAV adversarial audit of `cli_fmt` (2026-06-06), so that every documented API capability has corresponding test coverage, all code paths are exercised, and the crate compiles cleanly under non-default feature combinations (Motivated: the adversarial audit found coverage gaps including a documented API capability with zero test coverage and 6 acceptance criteria with no test mapping — regressions in these areas are undetectable; Observable: `cargo nextest run --manifest-path Cargo.toml --all-features` passes with N+12 tests (12 new) AND `cargo nextest run --manifest-path Cargo.toml --no-default-features --features enabled` compiles without error; Scoped: `tests/output.rs`, `tests/help.rs`, and `tests/docs/` spec files only — no `src/` changes; Testable: `RUSTFLAGS="-D warnings" cargo nextest run --all-features && cargo nextest run --no-default-features --features enabled`).

## In Scope

- `tests/output.rs` — add tests for: unicode_aware=true path (P02), merge_streams with newline-terminated stderr (P08), is_default() for non-default stream_filter/width_suffix/unicode_aware (P10), head(0) and tail(0) boundary values (P11), width=1 extreme boundary (P18), OutputConfig::new() (P16)
- `tests/help.rs` — add tests for: CliHelpStyle color field defaults (P09), opt_name_width overflow (P13), empty groups vec (P17)
- `tests/docs/` spec files — update `### Tests` mapping tables as each new test function is written (replace ⏳ markers in feature/001, feature/002, api/001, api/002)

## Out of Scope

- Source code changes to `src/output.rs` or `src/help.rs` — all tests must pass against current implementation
- Documentation updates to `docs/` — already consistent (completed in doc_tsk Step 2)
- Acceptance criteria AC-2 and AC-5 from `docs/feature/002_cli_help_template.md` — these require `claude_profile` integration context outside this crate's scope
- FT-5 content assertion (P07) — the test verifies count and line count; adding content assertion is an improvement but not a gap in contract coverage

## Requirements

- All work must strictly adhere to all applicable rulebooks (discover via `kbase .rulebooks`)
- 2-space indentation per code_style.rulebook.md
- Tests must be in existing `tests/output.rs` and `tests/help.rs` integration test files
- No mocking — use real implementations
- Tests must fail loudly with descriptive assert messages
- Test spec cases must use Given/When/Then bullet format with FT-/AP-/IN- prefix
- Each new test spec case must have a corresponding test function in ### Tests mapping

## Work Procedure

Execute in order. Do not skip or reorder steps.

1. **Read specs** — Read all `tests/docs/` spec files and `docs/feature/002_cli_help_template.md` acceptance criteria to understand the full gap inventory.
2. **Write output tests (P02/P08/P10/P11/P16/P18)** — In `tests/output.rs`, add:
   - `unicode_aware_truncation` — input with wide chars, `with_unicode_aware(true).with_width(N)`, assert truncation behavior
   - `merge_streams_stderr_trailing_newline` — stderr `"err\n"`, stdout `"out"`, assert no double-newline separator
   - `is_default_stream_filter` — `with_stream_filter(StreamFilter::Stdout)`, assert `is_default() == false`
   - `is_default_width_suffix` — `with_suffix("...")`, assert `is_default() == false`
   - `is_default_unicode_aware` — `with_unicode_aware(true)`, assert `is_default() == false`
   - `head_zero_produces_empty` — 3-line input, `with_head(0)`, assert content is empty
   - `tail_zero_produces_empty` — 3-line input, `with_tail(0)`, assert content is empty
   - `width_one_truncates` — input `"hello"`, `with_width(1)`, assert `width_truncated == true`
   - `output_config_new_matches_default` — assert `OutputConfig::new() == OutputConfig::default()` field-by-field
3. **Write help tests (P09/P13/P17)** — In `tests/help.rs`, add:
   - `test_style_color_defaults` — assert all 5 color fields and `tty_detect` match documented defaults
   - `test_opt_name_not_truncated` — option name longer than `opt_name_width`, assert name appears intact
   - `test_empty_groups` — `groups: vec![]`, render, verify output structure
4. **Update Tests mapping tables** — For each new test function written in steps 3–4, update the `### Tests` row in the corresponding spec file to replace the ⏳ marker with the actual test function name: `tests/docs/feature/001_output_processing.md` (FT-13..FT-18), `tests/docs/feature/002_cli_help_template.md` (FT-6..FT-8), `tests/docs/api/001_output_api.md` (AP-6), `tests/docs/api/002_help_api.md` (AP-6).
5. **Validate Level 3** — Run `RUSTFLAGS="-D warnings" cargo nextest run --all-features && RUSTDOCFLAGS="-D warnings" cargo test --doc --all-features && cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings`. All must pass.
6. **Validate non-default features** — Run `cargo check --no-default-features --features enabled`. Must compile without error.
7. **Walk Validation Checklist** — every item must answer YES.

## Test Matrix

| # | Input Scenario | Config Under Test | Expected Behavior |
|---|----------------|-------------------|-------------------|
| T01 | Wide char input (e.g. CJK) | `with_unicode_aware(true).with_width(N)` | Grapheme-based width measurement; truncation respects visual width |
| T02 | stderr `"err\n"`, stdout `"out"` | `StreamFilter::Both` (default) | No double-newline: result is `"err\nout"` not `"err\n\nout"` |
| T03 | Default config | `with_stream_filter(Stdout)` | `is_default() == false` |
| T04 | Default config | `with_suffix("...")` | `is_default() == false` |
| T05 | Default config | `with_unicode_aware(true)` | `is_default() == false` |
| T06 | 3-line input | `with_head(0)` | Empty content; `lines_omitted == 3` |
| T07 | 3-line input | `with_tail(0)` | Empty content; `lines_omitted == 3` |
| T08 | `"hello"` (5 chars) | `with_width(1)` | `width_truncated == true`; content truncated |
| T09 | (none) | `OutputConfig::new()` | Field-by-field equal to `OutputConfig::default()` |
| T10 | `CliHelpStyle::default()` | Direct field reads | 5 color fields + `tty_detect` match documented API contract |
| T11 | Option name 25 chars | `opt_name_width: 18` | Full name appears in output (not truncated) |
| T12 | `groups: vec![]` | `tty_detect: false` | Output renders without "Commands:" content section, or with empty section |

## History

- **[2026-06-06]** `CREATED` — Task filed from MAAV adversarial audit findings. Goal: close 13 test coverage gaps across feature guards, untested code paths, boundary values, and spec alignment.
- **[2026-06-06]** `VERIFY-FAIL` — Verification Gate found 1 valid finding (VF-1: P01 stale). See ## Verification Findings. Task updated and re-submitted for VERIFY.
- **[2026-06-06]** `VERIFY-FAIL` — Second Verification Gate found 2 more valid findings (VF-4: P12 unwarranted; VF-5: with_width_suffix method name wrong). See ## Verification Findings. Task corrected and re-submitted for VERIFY.
- **[2026-06-06]** `VERIFIED` — Third VERIFY gate PASS: VG-1/VG-2/VG-4 PASS; VG-3 found all 12 tests pre-implemented; VF-6 (width_one_truncates incorrect suffix assertion) fixed. Agents: MAAV-VG1(a5a177338a697192b), MAAV-VG2(a6629527803a0ec4a), MAAV-VG4(a6beba17b3196347c).

## Verification Findings

**VF-1 [VALID, FIXED]**: P01 Feature Guard — Already Present
- Agent finding: `#![ cfg( feature = "cli_help_template" ) ]` was already on line 1 of `tests/help.rs` when the Verification Gate ran; the task listed it as work to do.
- Fix applied: Removed P01 from In Scope, Work Procedure step 2 (renumbered 3-10 → 2-8), and Acceptance Criteria; updated goal count from N+13 to N+12.

**VF-2 [INVALID, CLOSED]**: P13 opt_name_width overflow misidentified as duplicate
- Agent finding: The adversarial agent claimed P13 duplicated `test_name_not_truncated`.
- Correction: `test_name_not_truncated` tests `cmd_name_width: 10` with a command entry — it exercises the command column. P13 requires testing the option column with `opt_name_width`. These are distinct fields with independent padding logic. P13 is not a duplicate and remains in scope.

**VF-3 [NOTED]**: Linter-completed spec file updates during gate execution
- During Verification Gate execution, linter hooks added spec cases to all 4 test spec files: FT-13 through FT-18 in `tests/docs/feature/001_output_processing.md`, FT-6 through FT-8 in `tests/docs/feature/002_cli_help_template.md`, AP-6 in `tests/docs/api/001_output_api.md`, AP-6 in `tests/docs/api/002_help_api.md`. Spec structure items removed from In Scope; ### Tests mapping (⏳ markers) remains as executor work.

**VF-4 [VALID, FIXED]**: P12 Feature Dependency — Unwarranted
- Agent finding: `cli_help_template = []` → `["enabled", "std"]` was listed as a deliverable. `cli_help_template` has no runtime dependencies requiring activation — `strs_tools` and `std` are not actually needed by this feature flag.
- Fix applied: P12 removed from In Scope, Work Procedure step 2 (steps renumbered), Acceptance Criteria, and Checklist C1.

**VF-5 [VALID, FIXED]**: `with_width_suffix()` — Method Does Not Exist
- Agent finding: Work Procedure step 3 and Test Matrix T04 referenced `with_width_suffix("...")` but the actual method in `src/output.rs:175` is `with_suffix()`.
- Fix applied: replaced `with_width_suffix("...")` → `with_suffix("...")` in Work Procedure step 2 (renumbered) and Test Matrix T04.

**VF-6 [VALID, FIXED]**: `width_one_truncates` — Incorrect Suffix Assertion
- Agent finding (third VERIFY gate, VG-3): test `width_one_truncates` failed — asserted `result.content.contains("→")` but implementation correctly omits the suffix at width=1 (suffix has visual width 1; adding it would push total past budget). Actual output was `"h\x1b[0m"`.
- Fix applied: removed the `contains("→")` assertion from `tests/output.rs:width_one_truncates`; kept `width_truncated == true` assertion which fully satisfies T08's contract. Added comment explaining the suffix-omission behavior.

## Verification Record

- **VG-1 (Scope Coherence):** PASS — 10/10 checks pass; P-labels unique, no In/Out-of-Scope conflicts, test counts match.
- **VG-2 (MOST Goal Quality):** PASS — all 4 MOST dimensions pass; N+12 count consistent with 9+3 named test functions.
- **VG-3 (Value/YAGNI Adversarial):** Implementation pre-completed — all 12 tests found in test files before formal VERIFY. Revealed test failure in `width_one_truncates` (VF-6), fixed during validation.
- **VG-4 (Implementation Readiness):** PASS — all 13 IR checks pass; all methods exist with correct signatures; `with_width_suffix` absent; feature guard present; `cli_help_template = []` (P12 dropped).
- **Level 3:** PASS — `cargo nextest run --all-features` → 54/54 PASS; `cargo test --doc --all-features` → 4/4 PASS; `cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings` → 0 issues.
- **Non-default features:** PASS — `cargo check --no-default-features --features enabled` compiles.
