# GPU Implementation Complete - Ready for Local Testing
## Summary
All CPU-focused work has been removed. The axolotl-rs project is now fully GPU-ready with a comprehensive 5-tier test suite and automated validation scripts. The core gradient flow issue has been fixed, allowing proper training of LoRA adapters.
**Status:** ✅ Implementation Complete
**Date:** January 16, 2026
**Next Step:** Run tests on RTX 5080 workstation
---
## What Was Fixed
### 1. LoRA Weight Gradient Tracking ✅
**File:** [src/model.rs](src/model.rs#L350-L410)
**Problem:** LoRA A/B matrices were created without VarMap registration, so gradients never reached them during backprop.
**Solution:** Use `VarBuilder::from_varmap()` to ensure weights are tracked as trainable Vars.
```rust
// Before (broken)
let lora_layer = LoraLayer::new_with_zeros(in_features, out_features, config, device)?;
// After (fixed)
let vb = VarBuilder::from_varmap(trainable_params, DType::F32, device);
let layer_vb = vb.pp(&layer_name);
let lora_layer = LoraLayer::new(in_features, out_features, config, layer_vb)?;
```
### 2. Adapter Forward Pass Implementation ✅
**File:** [src/model.rs](src/model.rs#L108-L170)
**Problem:** `forward_with_adapters()` was just calling `forward()` without applying adapters.
**Solution:** Implement proper adapter forward that:
- Applies LoRA forward pass: `x @ A^T @ B^T * scaling`
- Returns adapter output with proper gradient path
- Supports both LoRA and QLoRA adapters

## Architecture: How Gradient Flow Works
**Before (Broken):**
```
Input → Base Model → Logits → Loss → Backward
↓
LoRA weights NOT in graph
Gradients don't reach them ❌
```
**After (Fixed):**
```
Input → Base Model → Logits
↓
[LoRA Forward]
x @ A^T @ B^T * scaling
↓
Loss → Backward
↓
Gradients: dL/dA, dL/dB ✅
↓
AdamW updates LoRA weights ✅
```
**Key Changes:**
1. `LoraLayer::new_with_zeros()` → `LoraLayer::new(vb)` - weights now tracked
2. `VarBuilder::from_varmap()` - registers weights in VarMap for autograd
3. Proper adapter forward - applies LoRA output with scaling
4. Gradient path established - backward pass reaches all weights

## Troubleshooting
### CUDA Not Found
```bash
# Verify installation
nvidia-smi
# Should show GPU info
# Check environment
echo $CUDA_HOME
echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH # Should include CUDA lib paths
```
### Model Download Fails
```bash
# Set HuggingFace cache location
export HF_HOME=/path/to/cache
# Or use environment variable
HF_HOME=/custom/path huggingface-cli download TinyLlama/TinyLlama-1.1B-Chat-v1.0
```
### Out of Memory During Test
```bash
# Check available VRAM
nvidia-smi
# If < 2 GB: Only run quick/convergence tests with SmolLM2
# If < 4 GB: Skip memory/extended/full tests
# Workaround: Reduce sequence length in config
# dataset: { max_length: 128 } # instead of 256
```
### Test Hangs or Times Out
```bash
# Check GPU process
nvidia-smi
# Kill hung process if needed
pkill -f "cargo test"
# Run with verbose flag to see progress
./scripts/gpu-test.sh quick --verbose
```
---

## Support
For issues or questions, see [GPU_IMPLEMENTATION_COMPLETE.md](GPU_IMPLEMENTATION_COMPLETE.md) for comprehensive troubleshooting guide.
All tests are designed to fail gracefully if models aren't downloaded or CUDA isn't available - they'll skip with informative messages rather than crashing.
