### ⚠️ Skipped Requirements (Need Integration Tests)
| RFC9000-4.1 | Connection ID uniqueness | Internal to quinn | Cannot verify uniqueness |
| RFC9000-4.2 | Handshake completion ordering | Need live connections | Cannot test ordering |
| RFC9000-6.1 | Version negotiation | Internal to quinn | Cannot test negotiation |
| RFC9000-7.4 | Client certificate support | Need cert infrastructure | Cannot test client auth |
| RFC9000-17.1 | Initial packet handling | Internal to quinn | Cannot test packet format |
| RFC9000-18.2 | Invalid transport parameters | Internal validation | Cannot test validation |
## Test Strategy by Category
### ✅ Unit Testable (Configuration & Setup)
These requirements can be verified by testing our wrapper configuration:
- TLS version enforcement
- ALPN protocol configuration
- Certificate verification settings
- Transport parameter creation
- Basic error handling
### 🔧 Integration Test Needed (Live Protocol Behavior)
These requirements need actual QUIC connections to verify:
- Connection establishment flow
- Handshake completion ordering
- Connection ID generation
- Version negotiation protocol
- Packet format compliance
- Transport parameter validation
### 📚 Documentation Needed (Quinn Compliance)
These requirements are handled by quinn and need documentation review:
- Error code compliance
- State machine transitions
- Cryptographic parameter selection
- Protocol message handling
## Recommended Testing Roadmap
### Phase 1: Complete Unit Test Coverage (Current)
- ✅ Configuration validation tests
- ✅ Error scenario tests
- ✅ Wrapper behavior verification
### Phase 2: Integration Test Infrastructure
- [ ] Set up test certificate authority
- [ ] Create test QUIC server/client
- [ ] Live connection test harness
- [ ] Cross-implementation testing
### Phase 3: Protocol Compliance Testing
- [ ] Connection establishment flow tests
- [ ] Handshake ordering verification
- [ ] Transport parameter validation tests
- [ ] Error signaling verification
### Phase 4: Stress Testing
- [ ] Concurrent connection tests
- [ ] Error condition testing
- [ ] Performance regression tests
- [ ] Interoperability testing
## Known Limitations
### Library Dependency
Our implementation wraps the quinn library, which limits direct protocol testing:
- **Strength:** quinn is mature and RFC-compliant
- **Weakness:** Cannot directly test low-level protocol behavior
- **Mitigation:** Trust quinn's conformance claims + integration testing
### Test Environment Constraints
Unit tests cannot create actual network connections:
- **Limitation:** No live protocol verification
- **Solution:** Dedicated integration test environment
- **Timeline:** Required for full conformance claim
### Certificate Infrastructure
TLS testing requires certificate management:
- **Current:** Skip certificate-dependent tests
- **Future:** Test CA and certificate generation
- **Complexity:** PKI setup and management
## Conformance Claims
### Current Claims (Limited)
✅ **Configuration Conformance**: Our wrapper correctly configures quinn according to RFC 9000
✅ **Error Handling**: Basic error scenarios are handled appropriately
✅ **TLS Integration**: TLS 1.3 and ALPN requirements are enforced
### Future Claims (With Integration Tests)
🔧 **Protocol Conformance**: Full handshake protocol compliance
🔧 **Connection Management**: Proper connection lifecycle handling
🔧 **Interoperability**: Cross-implementation compatibility
## Maintenance Notes
- **Review Schedule:** Quarterly review of coverage gaps
- **Quinn Updates:** Track quinn releases for new RFC compliance features
- **Test Expansion:** Add integration tests as infrastructure becomes available
- **Documentation:** Keep coverage matrix updated with test results
