Variants

Merged

Merged into the entity the cache already held.

Created

Stored as a new entity: the patch created it, or its source does not say and the cache has no record of the key.

Refused

Not stored. The cache does not hold the key and the patch carries only the fields that changed — part of an entity, not one: its source marks creations and did not mark this one, or the cache evicted the key. The patch is handed back for callers that hold a full copy elsewhere.
