# Issue #232 Allocation Analysis

## Executive Summary
Issue #232 reported that the `hnsw_rs` wrapper allocated new `Vec<f32>` objects on every `add()` and `search()` call, causing ~1.5KB allocations per operation for 384-dimensional vectors. **This issue has been fully resolved** by the migration from `hnsw_rs` to `usearch` on 2026-01-14.
The current implementation:
- ✅ Accepts slice references (`&[f32]`), not owned `Vec<f32>`
- ✅ Allows buffer reuse across multiple operations
- ✅ Achieves 14,000+ operations/second with 70µs latency
- ✅ No unnecessary allocations in wrapper code

## Problem Statement (Historical)
### Original Issue (hnsw_rs)
The `hnsw_rs` library wrapper allocated new vectors on every operation:

**Impact:**
- Insert: ~1.5KB allocation per 384-dimensional vector
- Query: ~1.5KB allocation per search
- High-throughput: Thousands of allocations per second
- Allocator overhead from numerous small allocations
## Current Implementation (usearch)
### API Signature

1. **Slice-based API**: Accepts `&[f32]` references, not owned `Vec<f32>`
2. **Zero-copy input**: Caller can reuse buffers across operations
3. **Necessary allocations only**: Results allocated (required by API design)

**Internal allocations (usearch C++ library):**

- These are outside our control and inherent to any HNSW implementation
## Test-Driven Verification

Created comprehensive tests verifying allocation efficiency:
#### 1. Buffer Reuse Test

## Code Review
### Wrapper Implementation (`src/index/vector/hnsw.rs`)
**add() method (line 568-652):**

## Remaining Allocations (Necessary)
### 1. Search Results (`convert_and_sort_matches`)

**Reason:** API design requires returning owned `Vec`. Alternative would be:
- Callback-based API (less ergonomic)
- Iterator-based API (more complex, lifetime issues)
- Pre-allocated buffer API (breaks abstraction)
**Decision:** Accept this allocation as necessary trade-off for API ergonomics.
### 2. usearch Internal Allocations
usearch (C++ library) allocates internally for:
- Storing vectors in HNSW graph
- Search candidate lists
- Internal buffers
**Reason:** Inherent to HNSW algorithm, outside our control.
### 3. Batch Operations API (`add_batch`)

fn add_batch(&self, items: &[(NodeId, Vec<f32>)]) -> Result<()>
```
**Issue:** Unlike `add()` and `search()`, the `add_batch()` API requires owned `Vec<f32>` for each item, forcing allocations.
**Impact:** Less allocation-efficient than the slice-based `add()` API for batch insertions.
**Potential Solution:** Use generics to accept slices:

fn add_batch<'a, V: AsRef<[f32]>>(&self, items: &'a [(NodeId, V)]) -> Result<()>
```
**Recommendation:** Consider as future enhancement if batch operations become a bottleneck.
## Recommendations
### 1. Close Issue #232 ✅
**Reason:** Issue resolved by usearch migration.
**Evidence:**
- Wrapper accepts slices, not Vecs
- Buffer reuse verified by tests
- High throughput confirms no overhead
### 2. Document Allocation Behavior 📝
Add to `docs/guides/vector-search-performance.md`:

### 3. Consider Future Optimizations (Optional)
**Low priority** enhancements:
#### Option A: Pre-allocated Result Buffer API

**Benefits:**
- Avoid result allocation for repeated searches
- Useful for hot loops
**Drawbacks:**
- More complex API
- Lifetime management issues
- Not standard in Rust ecosystem
#### Option B: Iterator-based Results

```
**Benefits:**
- Lazy evaluation
- Memory efficient for large k
**Drawbacks:**
- Complex lifetime management
- usearch returns owned Vec anyway
- Would need to collect internally
**Recommendation:** **DO NOT** implement these optimizations unless profiling shows result allocation is a bottleneck. Current API is idiomatic and performant.
## Conclusion
✅ **Issue #232 is RESOLVED**
The migration from `hnsw_rs` to `usearch` on 2026-01-14 fully addressed the allocation concerns:
1. **Input allocations eliminated:** API accepts slices, not owned Vecs
2. **Buffer reuse enabled:** Callers can reuse buffers across operations
3. **Performance verified:** 14,000+ ops/sec throughput achieved
4. **Tests confirm:** Comprehensive test suite validates zero-copy behavior
**Remaining allocations are necessary:**
- Result vectors (required by API design)
- Internal storage (inherent to HNSW algorithm)
**No further action required** unless future profiling identifies result allocation as a bottleneck.
