# Grafana Dashboard Validation Report

**Date:** 2025-10-14
**Component:** Grafana Dashboards
**Status:** **[✓]** COMPLETE & VALIDATED

## Summary

All Grafana dashboards have been created, validated, and tested following TDD (Test-Driven Development) principles. The dashboards are production-ready and integrate seamlessly with Prometheus for monitoring AbsurderSQL telemetry.

## Deliverables

### 1. Dashboard JSON Files

Four production-ready Grafana dashboards:

| Dashboard | File | Panels | Purpose |
|-----------|------|--------|---------|
| Overview | `overview.json` | 6 | High-level system health (QPS, latency, errors, resources) |
| Performance | `performance.json` | 7 | Deep dive into query/cache performance, heatmaps |
| Multi-Tab Coordination | `multi-tab.json` | 7 | Leader election, cross-tab sync, coordination |
| Errors & Troubleshooting | `errors.json` | 8 | Error tracking, slow queries, memory leaks |

**Total:** 28 panels across 4 dashboards

### 2. Documentation

- **`PROMQL_QUERIES.md`** - 50+ PromQL query examples with explanations
- **`VALIDATION_REPORT.md`** - This document

### 3. Validation Scripts

- **`tests/validate_dashboards.py`** - Validates metric names match actual metrics
- **`tests/validate_promql_syntax.py`** - Validates PromQL syntax correctness
- **`tests/telemetry_prometheus_integration_test.rs`** - Integration tests (4 tests)

## PromQL Query Examples

### High-Impact Queries

#### P95 Query Latency
```promql
histogram_quantile(0.95, rate(absurdersql_query_duration_bucket[5m]))
```

#### Error Rate
```promql
rate(absurdersql_errors_total[5m]) / rate(absurdersql_queries_total[5m])
```

#### Cache Hit Rate
```promql
rate(absurdersql_cache_hits_total[5m]) /
(rate(absurdersql_cache_hits_total[5m]) + rate(absurdersql_cache_misses_total[5m]))
```

#### Slow Query Detection
```promql
rate(absurdersql_query_duration_bucket{le="+Inf"}[5m]) -
rate(absurdersql_query_duration_bucket{le="100"}[5m])
```

#### Memory Leak Detection
```promql
deriv(absurdersql_memory_bytes[5m])
```

*See `PROMQL_QUERIES.md` for 50+ more examples*

```bash
# Validation scripts
python3 tests/validate_dashboards.py          # PASS
python3 tests/validate_promql_syntax.py       # PASS
# Integration tests
cargo test --test telemetry_prometheus_integration_test --features telemetry  # 4/4 PASS
# Full test suite
cargo test --features telemetry               # 178 tests PASS
```

### No Regressions

- **[✓]** 99 tests with `--features fs_persist,telemetry`
- **[✓]** 178 tests with `--features telemetry`
- **[✓]** 169 WASM tests with `wasm-pack test`

---

## Production Readiness Checklist

- [x] All dashboard JSON files are valid
- [x] All metrics referenced in dashboards exist
- [x] All PromQL queries have valid syntax
- [x] Integration tests validate Prometheus format
- [x] Histogram buckets are correctly configured
- [x] Metrics increment properly on operations

---

## Known Limitations

1. **No HTTP Server Included** - Users must provide their own HTTP server to expose `/metrics` endpoint
2. **Native-Only Histograms** - Histogram metrics use milliseconds (not seconds) as this matches the native implementation
3. **Manual Grafana Setup** - Dashboards must be manually imported (JSON files provided)
4. **WASM Limitations** - Some metrics (e.g., filesystem persistence) not available in WASM builds

---

## Next Steps

### Future: Alerting Rules (Optional)

With dashboards validated and working, the next phase can proceed:

1. Create Prometheus alerting rules YAML
2. Define critical and warning thresholds
3. Write AlertManager integration config
4. Document runbooks for each alert type

**Estimated Effort:** 2 days
**Dependencies:** Grafana Dashboards **[✓]** (Complete)
