The version is part of the protocol definition: both peers must agree on it out of band.

Variants

V0

Commits the dialer identity after the Syn signature. If the signature scheme lacks conservative exclusive ownership (it admits key substitution), a dialer can complete a handshake under a public key other than its own under which its Syn signature also verifies.

V1

Commits both identities before every signature and uses injective transcript framing.
