Creates a new background task with a unique task_id. The task runs asynchronously and output is persisted to a file.

Returns the current state of a task, or None if not found.

Kill a running task

Attempts to terminate the task. On Unix systems, we use tokio’s kill method which sends SIGKILL. For graceful termination, we first try to wait with a short timeout.

Cleanup timed-out tasks

Checks all running tasks and terminates those that have exceeded the maximum runtime. Returns the number of tasks cleaned up.

Cleanup old completed tasks

Removes completed task records older than the specified duration. Also removes their output files.
