Also the hash-chain link type. Digest::chain is the only way to extend a chain, and it hashes prev ‖ bytes — where bytes are the record’s wire bytes, never a re-serialized or upcast form. Rehashing after an upcast would destroy tamper evidence for all history the moment a schema changed.
