How the journal is made durable before a mutation becomes observable.

A per-open policy, not part of the on-disk contract: a journal written under one policy reopens under any other.

Variants

FullFlush

Every publication waits for the storage device to flush its cache (F_FULLFSYNC on Apple platforms, fsync/fdatasync elsewhere), so acknowledged frames survive power loss.

Barrier

Every publication is ordered behind earlier writes without waiting for the device cache. This requires Apple’s F_BARRIERFSYNC; opening on a target without that exact primitive fails with an I/O error instead of substituting different semantics.
