The script wrote more than [MAX_SCRIPT_OUTPUT_BYTES] to one stream.

An error rather than a silent truncation, and the signer hook is why: a PEM chain cut off in the middle would arrive as an unparsable certificate, and the operator would go looking at their CA instead of at the script. A named refusal says which it was.
