Module checkout 

What one checkout holds: the GitHub repositories in it, and the commit each is checked out at.

Read from git and from the declarations git reads — the superproject’s remote and every .gitmodules in the nesting tree — never from a list kept beside them. A submodule added this morning has issues too, and one removed stops being asked about.
