read_item

Read one logical item, anchoring every attempt at the supplied position. Read-ahead is local only. Errors leave the logical position unchanged. Durable backends commit the returned position before exposing the result.

read_regular

Shared bounded observations for native filesystem implementations. They do not record history: the enclosing host observation commits before exposure.
