What the tries so far decide, for the Expected statements expected and at most max tries. Pure; never reads the author’s words.

Only the latest try can reproduce: an earlier one either was shown and rejected (then it is discarded) or was superseded by a later try. Every try counts against max, a discarded or rejected one too, so the author is called at most max times; a discarded try is never evidence of a statement either way.
