Read a line from stdin

Returns the line and a success flag:

  • ( line true ) on success (line includes trailing newline)
  • ( “” false ) on I/O error or EOF

Use string.chomp to remove trailing newlines if needed.

Line endings are normalized to \n regardless of platform. Windows-style \r\n endings are converted to \n. This ensures consistent behavior across different operating systems.
