http.server.request.duration — the OpenTelemetry HTTP semantic-convention
server metric, recorded by the server core for every request on every
protocol (no layer needed).
Attributes follow the conventions: http.request.method (the known methods,
anything else _OTHER), http.response.status_code, url.scheme and
network.protocol.version — no path, so the series count stays bounded.
The duration runs from the moment the request is handed to the app until
its response is ready to write (a streamed body’s transfer isn’t included).
Each series keeps the convention’s explicit buckets (Prometheus text format,
OTLP) and an exponential, schema-3 copy for Prometheus native histograms
(the protobuf format, super::exposition). Observations go to one of
[SHARDS] locks picked per thread, so threads rarely meet on one.
Functions§
- observe
- Record a finished request:
startedis when it was handed to the app.
