Sixty four thousand rows is the smallest stripe that keeps the ClickBench directory in single digit megabytes at a hundred million rows, and it puts a four byte column’s page at a quarter of a megabyte, which is the size a sequential read wants. Larger stripes buy a smaller directory and cost a sparse fetch, which has to read a page index before it can reach one part.
