A variable in a query

The name is interned behind an Arc<str> so that cloning a Var — which happens once per joined row in Binding::merge/extend/project and per hash-join key extraction — is a refcount bump rather than a fresh string allocation. Equality and hashing still compare the underlying str, so the observable semantics are identical to an owned String.
