The width a chunk of lanes columns should use: the narrowest supported width that covers it, capped at 16.

Lanes beyond the column count are wasted arithmetic, so this never rounds up further than it must — a 1-DOF model gets N = 1 and pays exactly what the scalar Dual path pays.
