Fast-forward a publication checkout to its origin.
The library form of onevcs sync, and like the train it answers for the
repository the current directory is in. branch is the branch to sync, and
None is the origin’s default one; a checkout that does not have that branch
checked out is refused, because a sync only ever fast-forwards the branch a
checkout is already on.
