Expand description

The code an ordinary Err out of the serve path carries, read off the last boundary the narrator crossed.

Until 2026-09-23 only the panic hook sent a code (GN-99). An Err out of serve went std::process::exit(1), and as PID 1 that is the kernel’s Attempted to kill init! — no code, no power-off, the tick simply stops. GN-01..04 were declared and never called. This is what calls them: the stage names the boundary that WAS crossed, so the failure lies in the step after it.

  • nothing past exec — the configuration was never read: GN-01;
  • config, network, lease, sink — the next boundary is a bound listener, so this is the bind: GN-02;
  • listener — the next boundary is the role: GN-03;
  • role, follow — a twin that could not follow (a primary crosses from role straight to serving with nothing fallible between): GN-04;
  • serving — the box was up and its serve loop returned an error: GN-05.
