The first file and the last, which is what a dataset opens from while the rest of its footers are still being read. Ascending, and one index when there is one file.
The last by name, not by date: the files are sorted by key, and a dataset whose
partition values are not zero-padded puts month=9 after month=10. The pair is a
heuristic either way — between the oldest shape and a recent one lies most of what a
dataset disagrees about — and everything it misses arrives with the rest.
