Executes an HWI request and returns its serializable response.
Does not print the response, but device operations may perform I/O and emit
prompts on stderr. Backup files are written to the current directory as
backup-YYYYMMDD-HHMM.7z; udev installation also changes system permissions.
Device lookup generally precedes operation-argument validation. Commands
requiring a device report -1 without a type or fingerprint. Unknown types
report -4 with an explicit path and no fingerprint, otherwise -3;
enumeration ignores unknown type filters. Keypool bounds and some unsupported
address modes are checked before device lookup.
