The pack’s text at id, or an error.
Fetches the REF and then checks what arrived hashes to the id resolve
already agreed with the remote. Fetching the bare id would be more direct
and is not universally allowed (uploadpack.allowAnySHA1InWant); this way
works against every server and still detects a ref that moved underneath us
between the two calls.
